Dennis,

The printer is on the network. Does it have a wireless print server or is it attached to another computer?

Windows 7, 32-bit or 64-bit?

Virus programs and firewalls on both computers, please.

According to the Win 7 site, that old AIO is not compatible with win 7. Read THIS. and look at the Learn more and "what others are saying" links. Today's all in ones are cheap--they make the profit on the ink--so you might consider a new win 7 compatible wireless printer-scanner for your network. Meantime, you could use your 6000 to scan and share the folder with the scans on your network.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your questions

The printer is on a wireless network.

Dennis,

The printer is using a wireless print server or attache to the wireless router using the USB Cable or is it attached to a host computer?

I had my Dell 964 Printer attached to a Dell 3300 wireless print adapter and had it working with XP, Vista 32-bit and 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit with no problems.

If on a network, was the print server(make and model helpful) setup and connected?

Make and model of your wireless router and type of security is also helpful.

Inspiron 6000 with an XP9probably 32-bit)

Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP

Allow Printer past Microsoft Essentials

Allow Printer past AVG

1. Open the AVG Program.
2. On the Tools menu, click "Firewall settings."
3. In the left tree menu, expand the Profiles item, and then select your firewall profile (for example "Computer in domain" or "Small home or office network"), and then click "Defined networks."
4. Locate "IP addresses whitelist" in the list of networks and double-click it.
5. Click Add IP.
6. Type the necessary values defining your local network (the IP address of your HP printer).
7. Confirm all changes by clicking OK (in all open dialogs, including the "Firewall settings").
8. Test the connection between your computer and the printer.

Rick,

The printer is currently attached to a Dell wireless 3300 adapter.

Not sure how to determine the wireless security.

I will follow the links to sharing files and allowing the printer to bypass AVG and MS Essentials.

Hopefully this will be the solution to my issue.

I will keep you advised.

Dennis,

Make and model of your wireless router is helpful. Had issues with a Belkin Wireless N router not being able to connect with WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security Personal.

How to login to your wireless router

I usually recommend using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11.

If you change anything other than the channel, the 3300 will need setup again. I recommend making a new SSID, if changes are made. It makes connecting everything easier.

Was the 3300 and the Dell 964 Printer attached to the network?

If it was, then we can proceed to installing the printer.

Inspiron 6000 with an XP (probably 32-bit) This should install wsith the printer disk) Is this computer able to print and scan?

Inspiron N7017 with a Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) Still need this information <-----

Rick,

The 3300 and the 964 are attached to the network.

The Inspiron6000 is currently scanning and printing properly.

The Inspiron N7017 is a 64 bit system which is printing properly but does not scan.

The 964 printer disc is damaged and does not function correctly.

Dennis,

See if you can get this off the printer disk.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Or

Try Simple OCR if you cannot get the program off the disk. If you can get the program off the disk, try installing it in the Vista Compatibility mode

The Dell All-In-One Center will allow you to scan images, just not documents. Use Simple OCR to scan the documents.

Rick,

I apologize for the time lapse.

Unfortunately I am attempting to follow your directions on a piece meal basis.

I was able to extract the OCR file and load the setup.exe from the Abbyy folder onto the Inspiron N7010

Unfortunately I had no success attempting to scan  to the N7010.

Though, upon attempting to scan I have discovered that I have lost all scan capabilities to all of my computers that are connected to my wireless network.

The print function still operates normally and I am able to print at will on each computer.

Should I just start from scratch and reload drivers and the OCR file on each computer?

Dennis,

When you tried to scan, did you try scanning from the Dell 964 Printer?

You selected your computer, then it should have look for applications to send scans to.

The printer is allowed past your virus program, correct?

Rick

That is correct. I attempted to scan from the Dell 964.

I attempted to scan to both computers.

I realized that something was wrong when the printer displayed only 3 applications to scan to, which were: email, file, clip board.

Usually when I scan a document to the Inspiron 6000 I select the MS Paint application which did not appear as an option.

After following the step by step directions provided by the 964 printer, I selected the "file" application, depressed the scan button and nothing happened.

I checked the scan function in the AIO progam that is installed on both computers and noticed the scan tab appeared to be faded ( not as brilliant  as the saved images tab). The scan tab did note that I was connected to the 964 printer when I checked both  computers.

The printer is allowed past the virus program on both computers

Dennis,

Were all three light green on the 3300?

Try this tweak...

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

If all three lights were green, then restart your computer after the tweaks and then try it.

If all three lights were not lit, wich one(s) were not lit?

Dennis,

Firewall and virus program on the N7010, please.

Is this enable on the N7010?

On the N7010, Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit? How did you install the drivers for the Dell 964 Printer?
