Help - Problem Refilling A920 Black ink cartridge
Hi,
For the first time I tried to refill the black ink cartridge on the A920 printer. Initially everything went well. Ten days later it started to print some light, streaky lines along with normal print. I used the troubleshooting in the printer and had it type many pages of dark wide lines with the top and bottom lines that had a diagonal line going through it. The diagonal line had spaces and the printer said that was due to clogged nozzles. I searched here and soaked the cartridge for 1/2 hour in hot water and used the cartridge cleaner from the IMS kit and tried again. The print was a light grey and illegible. I kept on using the troubleshooter to print many, many pages. It got somewhat better, but some lines were still lighter.
I called IMS technical support (one fellow told me to soak it for an hour) I was reluctant to do that due to the light grey results I got the first time. I called again and was told to use the cleaner on a paper towel for 1 1/2 minutes, dry the bottom and try to print. It was still light and dark lines. My next step was to make steam and hold the cartridge over it for about 1 minute, then use the cleaner.
From the forum, I saw Lilsheepck's post to put the cleaner on a paper towel, put in microwave and place cartridge on that for 5 minutes. I still had unsatisfactory results. (Prior to this I added more ink to the cartridge.) I also have the hole taped on the top of the cartridge. One tech told me it should be taped, the other said it didn't matter unless it leaked.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get it to print in uniform color?
I would appreciate any help with this.
Sincerely, Libra

I was actually asking for help on getting the refilled cartridge to work properly. The printer is out of warranty. I have purchased a few Dell cartridges, but I find them expensive and they obviously don't hold much ink. I also have an old HP printer and while that ink is also expensive, it lasts. It holds about 40 ml. of ink.
The last time we used the printer the first page didn't print well, but the rest of the document did, so we just reprinted the first page. That was an improvement.

I'm sorry you didn't get a good answer on this, because I've been experiencing very similar mixed/ultimately disappointing results, also even after trying various combinations of soaking, cleaning with solution, and running the print head cleaner tool. I also tried the alignment tool, which seemed on a couple occasions to help briefly, but like everything else, the success was short-lived. I also had the problem several times of the first page printing with much lower quality than the others. At last, nothing I did would work at all. So I gave up for a few weeks, then tried again--but at that point, the ink was probably dried out (though that in itself never caused serious problems with my original ink cartridge) . My only guess about the cause of my first instance of an unresolvable problem is that in the process of extensive fumbling and fiddling around trying to follow the very convoluted refilling instructions, I had done something to cause harm to the cartridge. For example, I know I touched the metallic foil several times. Later, I also saw that a small tear had occurred in this foil at the top, though I could still print somewhat for awhile after this tear occurred. As to my initial problems, I apparently overfilled the cartridge, even though I followed the instructions correctly on this, so I was dealing with chronic leaking for the first couple weeks. This seemed to be the main cause of my first several printing problems, because they could be remedied, more or less, by drying the cartridge and then performing some or all of the above processes. Until the last time I tried.
So as not to give up entirely, I'm going to try buying a remanufactured cartridge now and then try refilling it once it's empty.
FYI, it's against two laws for printer manufacturers to void a warranty due to the customer using a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, so don't ever let that scare you if and when you get a new printer someday.
