I have tried virtually every suggestion and no go. On one site I have option for download manager or single file download and always pick single file. I have downloaded so many files but cannot find them after downloaded. when I do finally get to choice of drivers from Dell there are 4 choices and I downloaded everyone but to no avail.
I have cleaned my computer of printer completely. Last time I tried I got farther than ever but in the end it said I would have to get system administrator to approve.
I have unzipped so many files I feel like a quick change artist but nothing happened. I'm not sure where to find the setupexe file as suggested here.

naftrad,
Make and model of your computer and opertaing system, 32-bit or 64-bit? If Windows 7/8 did you recently install the operating system or did the unit come with Windows 7/8?
Operating system in English?
What virus program and firewall are you using?

Hi naftrad,
As per the Windows 7 Compatibility with Dell Printers the A940 printer is incompatible. We can try to install the Window Vista drivers in compatibility mode and check if it works.
Click here to download and save the drivers for Windows vista on the computer and then click here to install the file in compatibility mode.
Please post the results.

Yes, the file name is R153717.exe; save the file on the computer and then perform the steps mentioned above.
For any clarifications feel free to contact me.

naftrad,
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Download Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
Download Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
