Installing a printer

I have new XPS running XP Prof

I presently have an HP Scanner, HP Deskjet printer and a old Epsom MX100 printer plugged into USB ports. They were set up by the Dell technician who set up the computer.

The old Epsom is not recognized by the system (no plug & play in those days). Requires "manual"
installation,

In going thru the ADD A PRINTER (from Control Panel) I am OK until I get to the "Select Printer Port"
It lists LPT's which are not used by the XPS
It lists com.1 thru com.4
It lists Print To File
It lists the Winfax Port

It then lists USB001 and USB002 virtual ports

I do not know which of the USB's to select. I am scared to just select one "on specs" for fear of fouling somethig up on the system

In attempt to identify the plugged in ports I temporarily unplugged the USB into which the old printer is plugged. The computer beeped but the listing of available ports did not change. I re-inserted it

I am near 80 years young and computer literacy 0-10 about 4 or 5

Can anyone assist me with the exact steps to take to try and install this old printer?

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=23272&seqNum=3&rl=1 This is an article about how to install a printer in Windows XP. It has pictures.

I wonder did the tech install the drivers for your printer. Here are the latest drivers for your printer

Regading my problems with installing the old Epson Dot Matrix MX-100 Printer

The article you included that walks you thru the XP Install Printer Wizard does not provide any details as to what selections to make. In the "choose ports" screen I still have no idea what to select

In going  to the Epson driver download site, the printer is listed OK but a note says that the download is intended for Windows NT 4.0/3.51 and Win 98/95

If I were to let it install the driver download would it harm or foul up the XP Prof operating system?

What do you think?

Many thx for your initial reply and any further aid you can give.
