LPT port for printer not showing?

I am trying to hook up a printer on my Dimension 3000 but my LPT port is not showing in the device manager, all that shows is a COM, and i only have a LPT port cable. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You'll need to enter System Setup (usually F2 on Dell systems), open the Integrated Device selection, and make sure your parallel port is enabled.

It occured to me right after sending my earlier reply that you can quickly check the properties of the LPT port by examination of its status within the Device Manager.

1. Start > locate the item My Computer and right-click.

2. Click on Manage

3. In the System Tools section, look for Device Manager and click once; the device list shows in the right side pane.

4. Click the "+" next to the item marked Ports

If the port drivers are installed, you should COM & LPT ports listed. There should not be any RED X's or Yellow !'s

In fact, if all the chipest drivers are installed correctly, etc, there should not be any RED X's or Yellow !'s anywhere in the Device Manager tree. Sometimes, these lower level devices are dependeant on higher level device drivers being installed first, i.e., chipset drivers, etc.

If the port is turned on in BIOS (System Setup), and still doesn't appear in Device Manager, try running a windows system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click OK
Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

llynster,
The OP already said the parallet port isn't listed in Device Manager. So either it's turned off in BIOS as you suggested, or there's a hardware failure on the motherboard, or it's a software problem with XP.

Thank you guys, I had to enable it in the bios, I looked there once but I had no clue it would be under the parallel ports. Thanks.

:)

If choices are available in BIOS, make sure you set the port to the optimal 'format' for your printer, eg: EPP, ECP, etc.  You'll have to read the printer manual to see which one it prefers for max speed and features.
