M5200n Drivers for XP SP2
I have a M5200n connected to a small network with Windows XP SP2 clients and a SBS2003 server. The drivers installed on the server and all works well from the server.
Problem: On the XP clients, when I change the default printer settings on the 5200 from Portrait to Landscape, the printer driver fails. I have to delete and reinstall the printer to get it to operate. Prior to the installation of SP2, all worked well. Not using SP2 is not an option.
I install the software locally on the XP client, the symptoms slightly change but failure is imminent. When the properties are changed, the printer drivers load very slowly, sometimes taking 5 minutes for the Printer and Faxes dialog to appear.
.This only occurs for the M5200 printer. All the other printers (about 10) installed on the network work flawlessly.

If uninstalling the driver and then installing it properly helped, then it would be a solution for your problem.

Is this a Lexmark T63xn printer? Can the drivers (version 1.09 from 15-dec-03) from the Lexmark site that are certified for XP and 2003 Server be utilized? Can the firmware for the network card be upgraded with the update on the Lexmark site (version 551.030 from June 2004)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver both at the client side and the server side and the drivers still fail. The obvious choice to save money is to replace the printer with one whose drivers are functional in the current environment.
It appears there are others in the forum with similar problems with the drivers and XP.

Solution:
System: Windows 2003 Small Business Server with Windows XP SP2 Clients, Default SP 2 firewall settings, Norton Antivirus Version 9.0
The Dell M5200n appears to be identical (except logo and color) to the Lexmark T630n.
I downloaded the Microsoft Certified drivers for XP/2003 (Version 1.09 15-DEC-2003) from the Lexmark website and installed them (after uninstalling the Dell drivers from the server and the clients) on the 2003 server. I was able to share the printers via the Active Directory listing and add them on the clients.
Everything appears to be working exactly as you would hope. I ran tests printing portrait, landscape, multiple paper sizes, and multiple feed paths and each test was successful. This appears to be the solution for the XP printing problems with the Dell drivers.

For the firmware part - NO WAY. Dell machines are modified versions, and if you upgrade DELL machine with Lexmark firmware, you will have serious problems (even inability to use printer at all). I'm not sure you will be able to claim warranty on this machine afterwards..

I did not upgrade the firmware on the machine, although I have sent an email to Dell requesting information about the compatibility. Maybe I will get information back from Dell regarding that, but in the meantime, the driver resolved the operational issues of the printer from XP SP2 and Server 2003. It actually works better than it did in SP1 with the Dell drivers (all the settings seem to work as one would expect).
