memory upgrade for 1700 series ?

hi all,

i've recently bought a dell 1700n laser on ebay. actually received a 1710n but could not tell the difference. probably i should not complain, the 1710n being the better printer (?)

now i'm considering upgrading the memory from 32mb to ??? mb
i'm working with a mac and have some friends with "left over memory" (from their previous cpu upgrades), so i figured i might be able to get some of their memory for almost nothing.

unfortunately i could not find the specs for the memory anywhere. would it have to be "specific dell memory" or would any (apple) memory work eventually?

btw, i'd be interested in your (especially mac user's!) experience with the 1700 series printers in general and the 1710n in particular. since it is built by lexmark for dell (and ibm), which one of their printers is it identical to? what are their weak points (i hear of frequent paper feed / jam issues in long term use). which "parts" (aside from toner cartridge and imaging drum) are "user serviceable"?

are dell, lexmark and ibm parts and consumables (and e.g. 3rd party refill toner) identical / interchangeable? does the 1710(n) printer require different stuff than the 1700(n)???
one of the reasons i'm asking: there is this guy who sells stuff on ebay for the _1700_ such as Dell PartNr: H4927 (paper feed upgrade), D4283 (imaging drum, used), J4465 (paper feed pickup rolls), K4437 (transfer roll). should i go bid for that stuff?

best
nimbus

btw: if you could reply by email to -- katzbaer@gmx.at -- i'd really appreciate it!

memory specs questions are sorted out - i'd assume the following chips should fit all printers of the dell 1700series (and probably other ones as well):

- MICRON 64MB 125 MHz 100 PIN PC133 CL3 SDRAM SODIMM Manufacturer Part# MT4LSDT1632UG-8G1 - Dell Part #: A0360951, A0360955, A0529875, A0529884
- MICRON 128MB Manufacturer Part # MT8LSDT3232UG-8G1 - Dell Part #: A0360950, A0360953, A0529878, A0529885
- MICRON 32MB Manufacturer Part # MT4LSDT832UDG8G1 - Dell Part #: A0360949, A0360952, A0529883, A0529887

printer memory generally seems more expensive than CPU memory. and my apple buddies tell me they have not seen these particular (printer) chips in the mac universe.

remains the question:
+ how much ram is really needed for graphics work?
+ and is it worth investing in this particular printer?
+ what are the weak points of the 1700 series ?(i hear of frequent paper feed / jam issues in long term use).
+ which "parts" (aside from toner cartridge and imaging drum) are "user serviceable"?
+ are dell, lexmark and ibm parts and consumables (and e.g. 3rd party refill toner -- chip coding issues ???) generally identical / interchangeable?
+ does the 1710(n) printer require any different stuff than the 1700(n)???

i'd appreciate information on (especially mac user's!) experience with the 1700 series printers in general and the 1710n in particular (most likely this modell is identical to the lexmark e342n).

hi,
just thought i'd let you know: 1710n printer worked fine from april to november, both with macs and pc on my small private network.

now i'm getting a persistent error 31 ("missing or defective cart"; none of the usual paper feed / jam issues reported by others*), which i have posted about in another thread.

yet, it was fun while it lasted: 160mb of ram seemed to help a lot when printing photoshop graphics, pdf files and all other stuff that usualle takes forever to print if your printer is low on ram.

*but then again i only produced 4,000 pages in total (about 3,000 of them w/ the original cartridge that came with the printer)
