Missing File "DL_Dashboard.exe"

When setting up my new system I installed a V313W printer. The setup disk placed a short cut called “Dell Printer Home”. When I click on the Icon a message says “looking for DL_Dashboard.exe” but can’t find it. Is something missing?

Lou,

When you said...

When setting up my new system I installed a V313W printer

Did you install a new operating system?

Dell Printer Home is the program you use with this printer. If the printer is installed properly, everything should work.

Make and model of your computer and operating system is helpful. 32-bit or 64-bit? If Windows 7, did the computer come with Windows 7 or was this upgraded?

You have a Dell V313w Wireless Printer.

Was the printer connected wirelessly? Did the printer work with a previous version or another computer?

The printer is connected with wireless or usb?

Lou,

I use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11, to make connecting wireless devices easier.

I would first run  Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.

With the printer not attached to the computer with a usb cable,

Uninstall the printer.

Restart the computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

With the computer online, insert the printer disk and follow the instructions. If you changed anything in the wireless router, I would recommend using a new SSID to make connecting easier. If you changed just the channel, then install the printer as an additional computer and follow the instructions. The installation will look for updates for the drivers.

Rick,

The whole system was new, Dell Inspiron 580S with Windows 7.The printer is conected wireless and works fine. I did a search but could not find it.

Do you think reinstalling the printer will help?

Rick,

I reinstalled the printer and it still works fine. The Short cut still does not open anything so I'm thinking it's not inportant. I beleive in "If it ain't broke don't fix it". So I just deleted the short cut and will forget about it.

Thanks for your help,

Lou :)

Lou,

To scan, you'll need to have either the program or an OCR Program.

Start, all programs, dell your printer look and see if anything is listed there. The programs can be Dell All-In-One Center, Dell Imaging Toolbox and Dell Printer Home.

Also in start, all programs, there should be an Abbyy Fine Reader. This is your OCR Program. If you do not have this, you will not be able to scan a document to your computer. You can try using Simple OCR, which is FREE.

Lou,

Make a system restore point.

Run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Uninstall the printer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

With the computer online, insert the printer disk and the printer should install. It will check online for updates. At some point, it will say the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)

You should now have Dell Printer Home and all your functions.

Virus programs and firewalls will try to block communications.

I have exactly the same problem as kgberman. My V515 printer has installed correctly. It prints, scans, and faxes. What didn't install correctly (on my Dell XPS 8300, 64-bit, Win7 Professional) is the "Dell Printer Home" software. The folder that the desktop shortcut points to (C:\Program Files\Dell\Dashboard\) is empty, except for the shortcut icon. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, running setup.exe as administrator, and running it in Vista compatibility mode). But "Dell Printer Home" does not get installed.

Strangely, however, it DID install correctly on my Dell Inspiron N5010: Same operating system, same install disk, same McAfee firewall, same delay while the installer downloads updated software.

So I tried copying the C:\Program Files\Dell folder from the laptop to the desktop. When I did this, the GUI for Dell Printer Home opened, but without any functionality. The tabs and buttons don't do anything.

Obviously, there is some issue on my desktop (but not the laptop) that prevents install.exe from installing Dell Printer Home correctly. I suspect it’s a permission issue, although as far as I know both machines are set up the same.

It's true that the printer works without the Dell Printer Home interface, but both kgberman and I are missing some functionality, like "scan to pdf and "scan to fax".

Any further thoughts are appreciated.

Ken

PS I also have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 netbook. I got the same result on it as on my desktop. The printer works fine, but there’s no “Dell Printer Home”.

PPS And This is wierd. My desktop won't let me post to this forum. My post from that machine came out blank. I had to use my laptop to edit it. Maybe this is relevant to the permission issue.

Ken,

Spent abouth 3 hours with the Dell techs and after unloading and loading the software and drives I think we git it fixed. Appearantly I had a crcorrupted user profile, all seams to be working fine now.

Thanks for your reply. I just Got off the phone with Dell Tech Support. He said he fixed up someone yesterday (probably you) with the same problem. As far as I could tell, all he did was run the setup in Compatibility mode and in Run As Administrator mode. I am pretty sure this is what I had done earlier. Anyway, it seemed to work. It took a lot less than 3 hours, no doubt thanks to your previous efforts.

Hi Ihave the same problem with my V313W. It will not install on my inspiron laptop or my desktop.

Been on with tech support last week, they were unable to fix despite several removals and installs, all done reotely by them. (I had already done this and been to web for updated drivers).

They said they would get back to me after further investigation but i am still waiting.

I know its a long shot but do you know the name of the tech you spoke to?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Natwest:

His name is Naveen Kumar.

I am waiting for a callback frm Dell to do an install on my wife's computer, where the same problem occured. I don't know if Naveen will call, or someone else. (I'm hoping they WILL call.)

The tech had claimed that this was a new issue for Dell, and that he had not had this problem prior to the day before I called. I suspect that a lot of people don't even call about the problem since the printer works fine without the "Dell Printer Home" interface, and since Dell doesn't make it easy to find the tech support phone number. I spent a lot of time looking at Dell's help pages and running into the dead end of being told to "Open the Dell Printer Home" program.

Okay--I just had some success.

This pertains to a V515w printer, a 64-bit computer running Windows 7, and the following scenario:

I installed the printer from the install disk; the printer works perfectly but the link to "Dell Printer Home" which appears on the desktop generates a "can't find DL_dashboard" error.

Solution:

I opened the folder C:\\Program Files\Dell\Dashboard. It contains only one file, Phome64.ico (that's the icon that appeared on the desktop).

I copied into the folder C:\\Program Files\Dell\Dashboard the following folder and files from the install disk:

Apps\Dashboard\Devices (with its three subfolders)

Apps\Dashboard\config.xml

Apps\Dashboard\dashboard.loc

Apps\Dashboard\prod.ver

Apps\Dashboard\bin\x64\DL_dashboard.exe

Apps\Dashboard\bin\x64\Framework.dll

Apps\Dashboard\bin\x64\Gui.dll

Apps\Dashboard\Languages\EN\strings.xml

And it works! All of these files aren't strictly necessary but a good install puts them there. Good luck.
