Thanks for that. It is my initial reaction but I'm under pressure to get something done this evening and was wondering is there anything I may have missed as it will take a couple of days for a replacement to arrive, presuming they wil give me one.
Quickest thing to do is go to Staples or Walmart to get the cartridge right away. It's possible to get a Dell Series 5 ink cartridge with a bad sensor in it. Here are some trouble shooting methods that help.
Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.
Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 5 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge.
Close the printer. It should print an alignment page. Any error messages?
Black cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)
Photo cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)
Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.
If these ink cartridges are new, then take them to the place of purchase for a refund or replacements. If they're old, then try purchasing a new Dell Series 5 ink cartridge.
Thanks again, If I had access to Concord then maybe so, but as I am in Ireland I will just have to wait for them to send me one, use it and then i will probably chuck the printer in the bin as dodgy cartridges in this day and age are unnaceptable. Poor quality, and by the looks of what i have seen through my trawling I am not alone.

I would say you have a bad ink cartridge and the printer is not recognizing it because of that.. see if you cant get it swapped out.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.
