Near Tears w/ a960 problems update......
I got the printer installation-the one that Dell tech support would cure all my problems. Got the CD, and the same thing happened. I have done EVERYTHING they have told me to do. I just wrote an email, asking for instructions on how to send the printer back. I don't have time to deal with this anymore. In turn, they sent me an email telling me to do stuff I've already done, but as a last resort said I could do a Repair Install. I printed out the directions, did as the directions told me to do. I rebooted with the Windows XP CD in, and only the Windows XP Installation screen came up, the blue one. No black screen with white letters, like the instructions said would pop up. I'm so FED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You do what you are told to do, and nothing happens like the instructions describe. So, now what do I do??? Now, I have to sit here, wait for them to email me again, telling me to do the same things all over again. I know they won't tell me how to return the printer. Dell, I'm SOOOO MAD AT YOU RIGHT NOW. DONE VENTING

JustWantHelp,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If you would post more details about your problem, then I could try to provide instructions to correct the problem.
If you want to return the system, please post to one of the Customer Care boards, and they should be able to help you, if you are within 21 days of purchase.

JustWantHelp,
When it says it needs the CD, does it have anything that gives a location, like a drive letter, D:\ or something like that. With Windows 95/98, the installer would say that it needs a Windows file, but the dropdown box would show A:\ (the floppy drive). You had to change it to the folder on the CD that had the file that it was asking for. Windows XP is usually better about that, but we need to make sure that the installer is actually checking the CD-Rom drive where you have put your Windows CD.
I do not have an explanation for why this is happening, but I am looking for places where the installation could go wrong. Any details you can provide may be helpful.

JustWantHelp,
Sorry for the delay in getting back here.
Please do not let your 21 days run out, if you want to return the printer.
When you insert your Windows XP CD, there may be a button to hit, like continue, or OK. It may also show you an install path. That is where the installer is looking for the files. If it is not pointing at your CD-Rom drive, then it will not find the files. Windows XP is usually pretty good about this, but you ought to be sure.
The All-in-One Center is where you need to go for scanning, so I do not believe the scan functions are going to work until it is installed correctly. Have you tried uninstalling everything that concerns the printer and trying to start again clean?
You also need to understand that the problem with installing the AIO Center may stem from a problem with Windows. Please try closing any programs that are running in the background. This would include antivirus and firewall, at least long enough to try to install the software. Please also try detaching anything that is attached externally to the system, except of course, your keyboard, mouse and the printer.
There are many things that could be blocking the installation of the software, and we need to see if we can eliminate a few of the possibilities. Please reply with details of what happens when you try these things.
