I would try disconnecting the printer, running the patch, it may or may not work. Then Manual Printer Driver Removal
Restart your computer. The install the Vista drivers and see if it works. Windows 7 is supposed to be backward compatible.
Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.
First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista. Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)
***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
Hi Rick, thanks for the above. I have followed the instructions, and got to downloading a Vista 64Bit driver for the 924 AIO Dell printer. It was in Chinese so I was unable to read the 'installation' windows. I have tried to guess at the instructions, rebooted and tried the printer....doesn't work. It says it is not set up with a driver. Any other suggestions as to how I can get through this e.g. an install in English would help. Thanks a lot for your assistance.
Tried the XP 64-bit driver and it wouldn't install. I have run the patch after each unsuccessful install so system should be clean again. Can you tell me...files are in C drive/drivers/924 - is it safe to just delete them now?
Thanks for your ideas. Any others or do I just have to ditch this printer?
Rick, what is UAC and how do I turn it off? How do I get system into compatibility mode? When I try another install under these conditions, should I use XP or Vista driver?
So many questions, thank you for your patience and advice.
Then install the printer drivers in the compatibility mode. The printer should install unless you have virus protection, security suite and firewalls blocking it.
***Please remember to turn on the UAC when your finished installing the printer.***
First time poster. I have been having quite a time trying to get my924 AIO to work now that I installed windows 7. I have tried everything suggested in the thread - multiple times. I have run the patch several times and retried the drivers for vista 64 and xp just to see if they worked - to no avail as well as turning off the UAC. Is dell working on drivers that will make the 924 compatible with windows 7? Should I wait? I know I am probably missing something simple. I was not able to manually remove the old drivers. Does the patch do that? I am really at a loss.
I just followed the instructions generously provided by PudgyOne to install my 924 to my new Windows 7 laptop and it took less than 10 minutes! I ran the uninstall patch, rebooted and installed the R148156 driver just as indicated. What a huge relief that I don't have to buy a new printer! Thank you so much!

delmis,
Sorry about that I copied the drivers from an older post and couldn't remember which printer it was.
Disconnect the printer, run the patch, restart your computer.
Try using these
Vista 64-bit Drivers.

Delmis,
Some people are having a little more sucess by turning off the UAC before installing the printer in the compatibility mode.
Start, control panel, users. Turn it off there. Please remember to turn it back on when finished.

Delmis,
I think you know the procedure to disconnect the printer, run the patch and manual delete printer drivers, then restart your computer. Then try...
How to Disable and Turn Off UAC in Windows 7
Then install the printer drivers in the compatibility mode. The printer should install unless you have virus protection, security suite and firewalls blocking it.
***Please remember to turn on the UAC when your finished installing the printer.***

Thanks.

delmis,
Avast is their virus protection. Some virus programs, firewalls and security suites block communications and need to allow passage.
