Also, if you are not on a domain...  Try editing the local machine policy to add the user to the afore mentioned policy objects to see if it works.  I believe that this should work the same as if the computer was on a domain.  That is why the printer only works until the first reboot of the machine...  After a reboot, the policy is applied and basically takes away any rights the DLBJ_"machinename" has to print.

Blayne,

Thanks for the quick answer.  Unfortunatly I tried exactly what you said and rebooted and it did not work.  It removed the printer upon reboot.

I added that user to the sections under group policy under the domain.  If I am missing a step I am sorry.  But I added it to all those areas to no avail.  I edited the default policy under the domain.

Let me know if I did it wrong or what.

I really appreciate any help you could provide.

Thanks bud,

Bill

Are you logged in as an admin when installing the printer?  Also, have you tried changing the usb cable?  If this doesn't work, let me know, I'll see what I can find out.  It may be a bad printer... Dell will ship you a replacement if so.

I am logged in as Administrator the whole time.  Each process was done while logged in as Administrator.

Yes, I have tried multiple USB cables, short, long etc.  Nothing.

Dont think it is a bad printer.  It works fine when connected to an XP workstation.

Thanks bud,

Bill

Believe it or not, I got it working!

I did a couple of things but am not sure which one fixed it.  I opened the properties of the Inkjet and added my renamed admin account in security and gave it full priv.  I also disabled bidirectional printing.

Those changes along with what you suggested got this to work!  It reboots and keeps the drivers.  No errors in the event viewer.  I tried it about 5 times.

You are the man!  Thank you so much for spending the time helping me.  If Dell put forth half the effort you did, I would buy more from them.

This is a good reference for solving the infamous DELETEING PRINTER DRIVER UPON REBOOT issue :)

Thanks again bud,

Bill

One additional thing.

I had problems with the print que after I did all this.  Each job got stuck in the que.  I had to stop the print spool after every job.  Then turn off and on the printer.  I was perplexed.

I went into the printer properties and under the advanced tab, print processor button.  I had to take off the J740 and pick the winprint option with RAW selected.

Rebooted.  Printer still there.  Jobs dont get stuck in the que.  Printing works.

Would be nice if Dell knew this.  I have worked 10 hours on this stinkin printer problem.  I should have just bought an HP.

After all this.  Print quality is not even that good.

I ask you this, was it worth it?  Not sure yet.  I will let you know later, as long as I dont have any more issues.

If I have anymore issues, I wont be posting anything, I will be calling my local garbage disposal company.

It was a learning experience.

Thanks to Blayne for his assistance.

Thanks,

Bill

In response to one of the two additional fixes that I was not sure fixed it.  It was disabling bidirectional printing under the printing properties.

I was playing around and reenabled it and it crashed out on me again.  disabled it again and everything was great.

Thanks again.
