wingmaker,

Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type

services.msc

Hit enter. Look for the print spooler. Make sure it's set for automatic and restart the service.

Hey Thanks Rick,

I've located the print spooler and it is set to automatic.
My problem is when installing the software. Once I okay the licencing agreements the message appears:
Processing cannot be continued because the print spooler service has been stopped. Restart the computer to start the print spooler service and try again.
When I press ok I get a large message saying Installation Failure and below an icon saying START OVER. When I press START OVER it takes me back to EASY INSTALL which I again do and again agree to the Licencing agreements and the same problem happens again. Very GROUNDHOG DAY :-)

So then I take the earlier instruction of restarting the computer but when I try  I get a message saying:
Cannot restart the system. Close the installer or application software currently running. Then exit the set up program for Canon and try again.

BUT there is no icon that will allow me to close the installer or application software!! It's this terrible vicious circle.

When I go into ADMIN TOOLS and to SERVICES, the print spooler is ijndeed stopped but alas when I press the START icon this message appears:

Windows could not start print spooler service on local computer.
Error1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

Any words of wisdom would be gratefully received as I'm not computer savvy at all.
Cheers

wingmaker,

Disconnect the printer.

Go to programs and features and uninstall the printer. Also try Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Now try installing the printer drivers from Cannons website. After you install the drivers, you should get some type of message that the printer is not connected. Connect the printer only at this time. If you connect the printer too early, then Windows will give it generic drivers and cause these type of problems.

Hi Rick,

I've tried that and downloaded the driver from Canon but am still getting the same message as with the cd installer ' Processing cannot be continued because the print spooler has stopped...etc

Is it time  to call it a day and send the PC back to DELL?
