PROBLEM WITH SCANNING FROM MY DELL PHOTO ALL-IN-ONE PRINTER #966

Please help with a problem that I am continuing to experience!!

I am REALLY frustrated!!  I cannot print or scan from my Dell AIO 966 connected to my computer as described in the subject line. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) on my Dell XPS 410 computer.  When I select the scan application from the printer menu, I first see the following:  "Downloading scan applications list from your computer".  After 1 - 2 minutes, the following message appears "Cannot retrieve scan applications list from your computer".  No matter what I do, I cannot scan, even after trying EVERY SINGLE FIX I've read in these forums.  I've completely uninstalled and reloaded the software, downloaded and installed the appropriate patches, turned off the computer and the printer, disconnected and reconnected the printer power cables, as well as the USB printer cable, etc., etc., etc., and still cannot get it to work!!  I have carefully followed all the suggestions that everyone has made and I still can't scan!  Can anyone provide a permanent fix to my problem?

I found the problem.  I went to printers and devices, selected my username.  clicked on advanced -> manage this printer -> edit.   Checked manage documents.  Then clicked manage documents -> edit and selected Print and Manage this printer.  I am not totally sure why it worked, especially since I already had those checked and when I went back to look in the advanced tab they no longer showed as selected.  Hopefully this will continue to work without having to do this everytime I restart.

I guess I spoke too soon.  I thought it was fixed because the buttons were no longer grayed out.  When I tried to scan it still could not find the programs on my computer.  I restarted and the buttons are grayed out again.  It kind of seems like some kind of permissions issue but I just can't figure it out.

lgillies,

Not good with permissons with professional, I'm a restricted user at work. Maybe someone can shed some light at the  Microsoft Answers-Hardware Microsoft people know about permissions.

Thank you, I will give it a try.  I had pretty much given up and decided just to buy a new printer (not dell), I had come to the conclusion that dell printers only work with dell computers.  I'll see if it works, really appreciate the post.

Hey I have had this printer for a long time and had all the same frustrations you describe, ESPECIALLY with the Scan to Network feature.  It would always say the same darn thing - "Cannot retrieve scan applications" -- AAARGH!

I think I figured out a work-around, by chance.  See if it works for you too.  Find the IP address of your printer (print the network settings page if necessary).  Use your browser to open up the printer's built-in management webpage.  For example, if the printer is at address 192.168.0.101, browse to http://192.168.0.101 to access its page.

Click on "Configuration," then "Scan to Network Host Management."  Check the box for "Delete all registered hosts" then click the button for "Delete."  Wait for it to finish.  It should go back to the management page.  Power the printer off and back on, and wait a few minutes for your computer to reconnect to it.  Try your scan again.

If yours behaves like mine, it should work.  This is not much of a work-around if you have to do it often (which I seem to), but at least it gets you out of a pinch!

Now if we could just get Dell to do the honorable thing and fix the firmware in the printer to address this issue, that would be really something!

Please do let me know by posting a reply here.  I have been frustrated for so long with this printer, you wouldn't believe.  I also do a lot of business with Dell at work (I'm in I.T.) and if this proves to be an answer, I will see if there is some way to get them to fix the firmware even though this model is old.  I see there are lots of other newer models that have a similar problem.  I'm sure it's the same answer.

That did not work.  Do I need to install the drivers again to get my hosts back?

I re-installed the drivers after following your steps.  I can now scan from the all in one center but the printer will still not find my applications.  I am good with this for now and hopefully Dell will do the right thing and fix the bug.  Thank you again for your post!  This has been a big problem since I sometimes need to scan things for work.

All of the applications were already added to my scan list.  Funny, since I have logged out and logged back into my laptop I can no longer scan to it anymore.  Nice feature, guess I have to follow the steps of removing all of the scan to networks and re-installing the drivers each time I need to scan.

In the past, we were able to install the software on Windows XP computers, and set them up to receive scans with no trouble.  A year ago, we also were able to set this up for a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit computer.

This week, I have been struggling to get this working on a new Windows 7 Professional 64-bit notebook computer.  Still no solution, but I have a symptom to share, which might give someone an idea to try.  When you look at the list of available computers on the printer's configuration page, it lists their name and their correct MAC address.  Whenever we tried to specify a name for our new computer, a different random MAC address appeared in the list.

That's where we stand now.  It appears that the printer is receiving a random MAC address from the AIO software on the computer.  When you try to scan from the printer to the new computer, it attempts to connect to that random MAC address, and fails.

We have not updated the printer's firmware, because we are afraid that the other computers that currently receive scans will stop working.

Does this provide any new clues to the thread?

Rich,

Dell 966 Printer

Did you try this procedure to install the printer?

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...
