reinstall A940

I had taken my A940 off, because I had become unsatisfied with its performance (ink cartridges drying out too fast). Tried to install a HP 1610 AIO, but even computer expert could not get it to install.
Out of curiosity I tried to reinstall the Dell. Window hardware wizard will detect it, but when I insert Drivers and utilities CD for  A940 and click install, a window will pop up instructing me to check my connections, because device not connected to PC.
After going round and round with both HP and Dell support, trying to install the HP printer, I'm at my wits end now that the A940 won't reinstall, was even willing to shell out another $65 for new ink cartridges and of course the chat support in India (lol) is off for the New Year, which may not be a bad thing.
From prior experience usually got my problems solved with help from forum.
Would appreciate any pointers on how to break that vicious cycle of now the printer is here, now it's not lol

Uninstall all printer software (Dell and HP) from your computer. In order to clear the software completely you must reboot your system But before you reboot, plug the dell or HP printer back in and then reboot. When the sytem comes back up it should find the printer as new hardware, insert the printer CD and follow the instructions.

It can not install the printer software without the printer being plugged in!

Give it a whirl...
