saving scans as documents

Hell everyone.  :emotion-1:

I have a Dell 926 all in one printer/scanner/fax and it works just fine but regardless of what I am scanning in, it only saves items as image files. :emotion-6:

JPEG, Tif, Giff... you name it. Those are all options but saving as a document- word, adobe, whatever- not an option. What do I do?

I looked through all the software that came with the computer but there is nothing that will enable me to save scanned documents as documents.

Is there additional software I can download or purchase from Dell to enable this?  Are there any other software programs available that are also compatible?

I'd really appreciate some  advice on this subject.

Thanks

 CyberKat1,

Do you have the OCR Program installed?

Do you have the printer disk?

Make and model of your computer and operating system is helpful. 32-bit or 64-bit?

Try reading...

Update list of applications to send scans to and to scan to Microsoft Word, etc... the type of file will be .rtf

Ok,  I got my computer in 2008. It's a Dell Inspiron 530S, 1.99 GH  .99 GB  E 2180 @ 2.0 GH. The printer is a 926 all in one print/scan/fax

I have the original printer disk, too. Should I put it in and do a re-install? Maybe I missed something the first time.

What is the OCR program? I can't seem to find it on my list in C drive...

I also discovered that there is a way to automatically update any software for the printer but as it turns out it says my software is all up to date...

I must admit I am NOT very tech savvy.

I appreciate any suggestions/help

Thanks

 CyberKat1,

When you scan, are you scanning from the Dell All-In-One Center?

The OCR Program scans the image and converts it to characters. Optical Character Recognition The program that usually installs is called ABBYY FineReader  Sprint. Once it is opened and activated, even registered, you should be able to scan a document but need to Update list of applications to send scans to

We can go through this slowly. If you have quesdtions feel free to ask. If the printer is not installed correctly, usually scanning is an issue. Without knowing the operating system and if it's 32-bit or 64-bit, the basic instructions to install the printer can be found at...

I think I finally figured it out.

This site had a page where you could download directions for the printer and when I did, I realized the way I'd been accessing it was all wrong.:emotion-55:

I should have gone through programs but instead I went directly to the Printer it'self. That's   why it didn't offer the option to save as a document.

While I haven't s canned anything new in yet... I did see how I had the option to tell it I was scanning a document and save as a document.

Like Scully once said to Mulder. "The answers are out there. You just have to know where to look for them". :emotion-4:

And apparently this forum (website) is the right place to look.

Thanks for all your help
