Scanner won't scan
Hi--
I just tried to use my scanner for the first time since I connected it to my new laptop, and it won't work. I have a Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 942 , and the printing and copying capabilities all work, but the scanner gives me an error message saying that "The All-in-One driver did not respond."
In December, I switched from a Dell workstation with Windows XP to an HP laptop running Vista Ultimate. I have re-installed the drivers from the original disk, but the scanner still won't work.
Can someone please help me? I have a time-sensitive project that I need to complete, and I really desperately need my scanner to work!
Thanks!
Anita

Try installing the printer this way. It doesn't matter if you have a Dell computer or not. The drivers, Utilities, firmware and patches are for the printer.
How are you connected to the printer? wired of wireless?
If wired, disconnect your printer. Go to start/programs/Dell printers and un-install your printer.
Restart your computer.
Now go to drivers and downloads/select product/printers/select your printer. Download drivers, Utilities, firmware and Patches.
Install your printer. You'll be prompted when to connect it.
If wireless, fix your network first.
Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.
Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)
Use WPA security
Mixed b and g mode(n if available)
Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels.
After router is done, now setup your wireless print server/printer.
If wireless printer server is used, Plug USB cable into computer and print server. Insert the print server disk. Choose Network, then choose print server and follow the instructions.
Now setup the printer.
Now go to drivers and downloads/select product/printers/select your printer. Download drivers, Utilities, firmware and Patches.
Install your printer. Choose Network. Install the drivers.
Everything should now work.

I followed your instructions, and the scanner worked--once. And what is even worse is that now I can't print either!
I really need some serious help here--I depend on this printer for my livelihood, and I really cannot afford to go out and buy a new one at the moment. It has worked perfectly ever since I bought it, but now it's not cooperating with the new laptop. I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer and went to the site and updated the drivers, and it didn't work.
I need some Dell expertise--fast!

System restore will take your computer back to before you changed this. Then you'll have your printing back.

Well, going back to an original restore point helped with the printing, but the scanner is still not responding. I found a forum on CNET with a bunch of disgruntled useres talking about this very issue:

Apparently, Dell's response is to telll users over and over to re-install their printers/drivers and/or OS. When that doesn't work, they grudgingly send you a refurbished 942 that breaks again after a few weeks.
My warranty has run out per my Service Tag, so Dell won't even allow me to chat or email with Tech Support. Essentially, I am being abandoned by this company.
I guess at this point, I have no choice but to buy another printer or add a separate scanner. You can bet it won't be a Dell!

If your printer copies then the hardware is fine. Can you go into the Scanners and Cameras control panel and scan from there?
