Hi daveq2,

You can try the following steps to resolve this issue:

Stop and Restart the Dlcq_Device Service:

Perform the steps below to stop and restart the Windows service for this printer.

  1. Click the ‘Start button/ Windows Logo on desktop, and then type ‘Run’ in search bar above that.
  2. In the ‘Run’ window, type ‘services.msc’, and then click OK.
  3. Locate ‘dlcq_device’ in the list of services, right-click the service, and then left-click Start.
  4. Locate ‘Print Spooler’ in the list of services, right-click the service, and then left-click Start.

If this does not work, you can uninstall and reinstall the printer driver for your computer.

To uninstall printer drivers completely:

Click on Start/Windows logo on desktop -- > Control panel -- > Programs and features -- > Locate Dell 966 printer -- > Right click and uninstall -- > Restart your computer (Make sure that printer USB cable is disconnected from the computer).

Once the computer restarts, you can download the printer driver from the link below:

http://dell.to/S7p4Ob

Steps to download drivers:-

  • Click 'Download' to download the list to a folder you will designate.
  • Click 'Save'. Then designate the folder you would like to save the files to.
  • Once you have designated the folder you would like to save your files to, Click 'OK'.
  • Selected downloads will automatically start downloading. You can Pause , Stop , or Continue  downloading the items you have selected. Next is Installation.
  • To start installation, Click Open folder. Right-click a downloaded file and select the option to ‘Run as administrator’.
  • A small window will appear with 'Continue' and 'Exit' buttons, click 'Continue'.
  • In the Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to window, click OK.
  • If a message appears asking to create a folder, click 'Yes'. If a message appears asking to overwrite the folder, click 'Yes to All'.
  • In the All files were successfully unzipped window, click OK.
  • A new window will appear, follow the prompts that appear to finish the installation.
  • Restart your computer.

If you have a printer CD, you can follow the steps below to reinstall printer again:

  • Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD in the CD-ROM drive of the computer connected to the Ethernet network.
  • The CD should automatically start.
  • Click on ‘autorun.exe’ at autoplay options.

  • Select ‘I Agree’ with the terms of the License Agreement and click Next.
  • Choose the software to install by checking or unchecking the check boxes. The printer driver must be installed. Click Next to install the options selected.
  • This starts the installation. It takes about 15 minutes for the installation to complete. The printer must be on during the software installation.
  • After the software and drivers are installed, the 'Congratulations, Setup Complete' screen appears. Click the Test Page button to print a test page.
  • The printer software starts to search for applications that work with the such as photo software. This search takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • After the printer software has completed searching for applications, the fax setup software screen appears. The customer needs to provide the information for the fax software setup. This information can be set up now by clicking View Printer Setup Utility or can be set up using the Dell All-In-One Center at a later time.
  • Click Close to set up the fax options later.
  • The Dell All-In-One Center opens. The printer setup and software installation on the wired network is now complete.

If this does not work, It may be a mechanical failure with the scanner. I am adding you as a friend; please accept my friend request and send me a private message with the system Service Tag so that I can check the system warranty details and help you further.

Please reply in case you have further questions.

During the install it asked for the USB cable to be plugged in. As soon as I did, Windows recognised it and installed. I let the All-in-one continue installing. The situation is now much worse. I got 'Time executable stopped' as it finished installing, and get whenever I re-boot. The printer appears in 'Devices and Printers' but any attempt to use it, or to print, finds no printers installed. I can scan, but not using the All-in-one interface.

If I now try to install a printer, Windows claims the Print Service Spooler is not running. If I manually start it, it gets stopped whenever I try to print.

Its now complete mess.

How do I accpt your friend request?

Hi  Daveq2,

I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you, I understand the situation you are in. We can try a couple of steps to resolve this issue.

Firstly, we need to uninstall the printer from Control panel. You can follow the steps below:

Click on Windows logo on desktop -- > Control Panel -- > Programs and Features -- > locate Dell 966 printer -- > Right click and Uninstall printer -- > Restart your computer.

Once the computer restarts, follow the steps below to Power On Reset the printer:

  • Turn the printer off.
  • Disconnect the power and data cables from the printer.
  • Wait at least five seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and data cables to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on.

Then from your computer:

  • Click on Windows logo on desktop -- > ‘Computer’ -- > Click on C drive (in which operating system is installed)
  • Go to ‘C:\Windows\System32\Spool' (as an example, image is shown below).

  • Locate the printer driver file folder and enter. Find files ‘W32x86 (32 bit)’ or ‘W32x64 (64 bit)’. Delete them.
  • Locate the ‘Printers’ file folder and enter. Delete all the queued files in that folder.
  • Locate the ‘Prtprocs’ file folder and enter. Find files ‘W32x86 (32 bit)’ or ‘W32x64 (64 bit)’. Delete them.

 Once you delete those files. We need to uninstall printer from registries.

  • Click the ‘Start button/ Windows Logo on desktop, and then type ‘Run’ in search bar above that.
  • In the ‘Run’ window, type ‘regedit’, and then right click and 'Run as administrator'.

We need to delete the Dell printer entry from ControlSet following the path:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> CurrentControlSet --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Drivers --> Version-3 (Delete Dell printer entry).
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> CurrentControlSet --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Print Processors (Delete Dell printer entry)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> CurrentControlSet --> Control --> Print --> Printers (Delete Dell printer entry)

 Delete the Dell printer entry the same way from ControlSet001 from the following paths:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet001 --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Drivers --> Version-3  (Delete Dell printer entry)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet001 --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Print Processors (Delete Dell printer entry)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet001 --> Control --> Print --> Printers (Delete Dell printer entry)

 Delete the Dell printer entry same way from ControlSet002 from the following paths:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet002 --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Drivers --> Version-3 --> (Delete Dell printer entry)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet002 --> Control --> Print --> Environments --> Windows NT x86 --> Print Processors (Delete Dell printer entry)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SYSTEM --> ControlSet002 --> Control --> Print --> Printers (Delete Dell printer entry)

 Once the registry entries are deleted, follow the steps below to check and change the printer services:

  • Click the ‘Start button/ Windows Logo on desktop, and then type ‘Run’ in search bar above that.
  • In the ‘Run’ window, type ‘services.msc’, and then click OK.
  • Please right-click on the below listed items and select Properties.
    1. Print Spooler
    2. RPC
    3. LexBCE (if applicable)
    4. HTTP & other dependencies
  • Ensure they are selected as ‘Automatic’ (from drop-down) and ‘Start’ button clicked.
  •  Click Ok and restart your computer.

Once again try to install the Printer drivers following the steps from the previous post. As I see that you have accepted my friend request, you can reply in private message as well, in case you would like to share any information.

Keep me posted with the results.

Hi daveq2,

Thank you for your response and the efforts you put in to resolve this issue. Since we have tried reinstalling the printer driver and have checked the registry settings as well, it appears to be an issue with Operating system of your computer. You can perform an Operating system reinstallation on your computer to resolve this issue.

Note: Before you proceed with that, I will advise you to take a complete backup of your data (pictures, music, applications, videos, documents) as this step leads to complete data loss. Remove all the external peripherals (like printers, scanners, any USB device except keyboard and mouse) connected to your computer.

Steps for Operating system reinstallation are:

  1. Insert the Microsoft  Install DVD into the DVD drive of the computer.
  2. Restart (or power on) the computer.
  3. Press the key as soon as the keyboard lights up.
  4. The Boot Menu appears.
  5. Click CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive, and then press the key.
  6. Window appears that says Press any Key to Boot from a CD or DVD.
  7. Press a key on the keyboard.
  8. Click Language, Time, Currency and Keyboard Method, and then click Next.
  9. On the Windows Installation page, click Install Now.
  10. Review the terms and click I accept the license terms to proceed.
  11. On the ‘Which type of installation do you want?’ window, click ‘Custom’ (advanced).
  12. On the ‘Where do you want to install Windows’ window, click ‘Drive’ options (advanced).
  13. Click Disk 0 Partition 1, and then click ‘Delete’.
  14. On the If you delete this partition, all data stored on it will be permanently deleted window, click OK.
  15. On the Where do you want to install Windows window, click New
  16. When prompted to select the size of the file, select the size, and then click Apply.
  17. Click to select the partition, and then click Format.
  18. On the If you format this partition, all data stored on it will be permanently deleted window, click OK .
  19. On the Where do you want to install Windows window, click Next.
  20. The Installing Windows window appears.
  21. The Setup window appears.
  22. Select a user name, password, and picture for your user account.
  23. On the Choose a computer name and choose a desktop background window, click Next.
  24. On the Help Protect Windows automatically window, click Use Recommended Settings.
  25. Click to select your time zone, and then click Next.
  26. The Thank you window appears.
  27. Click Start.

Once the Operating system reinstallation is complete, please install the drivers for your computer in following sequence:

  • Chipset
  • Communication
  • Input Device Drivers
  • Network
  • Audio
  • Video

Please reply for further clarifications.

I too have tried re-installing the printer and drivers.  I have a 926, but I see that lot's of people are having this issue with many Dell models.

Is there anything that Dell can do, or do we have to buy an HP?

Thanks!!!!
