Sorry. I'm not familiar with that printer at all. I just threw out the idea; it might be worthless.
I've used JetDirects with some smaller HPs, and sometimes they just stop working. I've told the users to turn off the printer and reset the JetDirect. That usually gets them going again for a few days.
I might suggest you browse thru HP's website and see if they have any FW updates or know about this issue (or similar). This may not be an issue with the Dell printer at all. (too bad you didn't buy the 1720dn..... it has a network port built-in) OBTW..... HP has no interest in making sure their products work with Dell printers.
Did the 1720 ever have this problem when connected directly to a PC with a USB cable?
Yes, you can disable the sleep feature on the 1720, but be prepared to pay a lot more on your power bill. Imagine a small clothes iron plugged in and hot all the time. This would be the equivalent of keeping the printer awake all the time; keeping the fuser hot.
Short of buying another printer that has an integrated network port, a couple of suggestions: 1. Use a PC on your network to act as a print server. Connect the printer to this PC and share it to your network users. 2. Looks at other network adapters. Many companies besides HP makes these; LinkSys makes a couple of good models.

Maybe it's just going to sleep. Does the printer reconnect if you turn it off and back on?

Sometime yes, sometime no :(
Can I disable the sleep mode on this printer?
There is no LCD screen on this printer, do you know how I can check/modify the printer settings?
Thanks a lot,
Chris
