fiveab,
Ckeck your firewall and virus program to allow printer communications?
Did you Update list of applications to send scans to?
Try these tweaks?
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
Restart your computer.

fiveab,
What virus protection and firewall are you using?
Try running Finding System Information remove your product ID and post the rest of the information back here.

fiveab,
You didn't recently install the operating system?
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Uninstall the printer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
With the computer online, insert the printer disk. Install the printer. At some point it will ask if you want to update it from online, click yes and follow the instructions. Then you'll get a message the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)
If you need the Vista 64-bit drivers, they can be downloaded at Dell V505 & V505w All-In-One (PRODUCT) RED™ Printer owners thread (W7)
Your virus program and firewall will block communications. Since you did not provide that information, I cannot tell you how to allow the printer past them.
