kberli,

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and un-install all versions of Java, restart your computer and download and install the latest Java.

Disconnect the printer. Un-install the printer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers

All other drivers

If wireless, fix your network first.

Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.

Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)

Use WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(WPA Personal). Most wireless devices work best with this type of security.

Mixed b and g mode(n if available)

Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels. (I use channel 11)

Save and exit. Power everything off for 30 seconds. Power everything back on, wait 30 seconds, now try to connect.

How Do I Connect a Dell™ Wireless Printer to a Wireless Network

Choose your printer. Beneath your printer, select your operating system. You'll be redirected to another page. Then click on show all steps. It will walk you through the installation process.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

OK..I went in and did all updates in Windows.  The only ones that I didn't have were "optional", but I went ahead and did all of them.  I have deleted all old versions of Java and downloaded the most recent.  My printer was already uninstalled from earlier when I had to restore my system.  I am now at the step where I am downloading the driver.  The link in your reply has taken me to a driver that was last updated in 10/2008.  The driver that I had downloaded before was updated 3/2009.  Should I still be using the older one?  Thanks so much for your help!!!  I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

kberli,

I have had better sucess with people using the drivers provided by Dell's website. People have been using Windows Updates to update their drivers and Microsoft either gives you the wrong drivers and/or they get installed wrong, causing many devices to fail.

Try the newer drivers first, if you install it and it doesn't work, then un-install the driver, then restart your computer to make the removal final, the install the other driver.

Remember to setup the printer before you install the drivers.

The driver that I downloaded last night was from Dell's website.  I have already downloaded the older driver (10/2008), just not installed it yet.  Do you think that I should go ahead and delete it and go back to Dell's site and download the newer one then?  Also, I missed the printer setup before I install step...ugh.  Do you mean to just attach it with the USB cable before I install the driver?  I read the instructions above, but it was regarding wireless.  Here comes the part where I am an absolute dummy...My V505 is wireless, but I keep seeing where I have to connect it to my wireless network.  Is that meaning if I have wireless internet?  We don't, if that is what it means, so I was just planning on using my usb.  In my mind I was thinking that a wireless printer would work somewhat like a wireless mouse, but then all the "network" talk came up (I know...I know...you're opinion of my ability just went WAY down...lol).  Anyway, if I just connect using a USB cable, does it then just need to be connected before install of the driver?

kberli,

If you want to connect it with the USB Cable that's fine. The printer does have a function that it can be used wireless using adhoc, but more information can be found at the link I provided above.

Here's what to do. Disconnect the printer.

Uninstall the printer.

Restart your computer.

Install the proper drivers(use the ones from Dell's website). You'll be prompted when to connect the printer (powered on). Please use a 5ft USB Cable of smaller.

If the printer does NOT install for you, please tell me the make, model and operating system of your computer.

kberli,

If you have problems when restarting the computer, it may be a setting in the bios trying to boot from the USB Port. Restart your computer and press F2 when you see the manufacturers screen. Then look for boot sequence. I have mine setup for CD Rom, then Hdd(hard Drive, then you can select the rest. We usually have this issue when people restart their computers with their iPods connected. The computer is trying to boot from the iPod.

Also here is another tweak.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Let me know what happens. If you still have a problem, make and model of your computer, I know you have XP.

Well...bad news.

I totally crashed again.  I set the boot sequence how you recommended and my USB root hubs were all already unchecked.  Anyway, I ended up w/my system as it was when I originally purchased it.  It wouldn't let me get to the system restore point.  What a mess. For the last two days I have been re-installing programs and luckily I have all of my data files backed up w/Carbonite.  Holy cow...this printer has made SUCH headaches for me.  I am just at a loss.  I guess I'm going to have to buy a new AIO and not sure what I'll do with this one since I bought it off of eBay (brand new).  Anyway, thanks PudgyOne for ALL of your help...it was a good try :)  I haven't reinstalled SVC pack 3 yet and was thinking that I might try to install the software minus SVC pack 3 (since that is supposably the issue), but I just read another post that said they tried unsuccessfully with and without SVC pack 3.  I just don't think that I can deal with any more "hard drive stress" if it didn't work...lol.  I wouldn't advise ANYBODY to buy the V505 if you have the XP OS and I am truly disappointed in Dell for continuing to sell this AIO without some sort of warning.

kberli,

I don't know how that happened. If the directions I gave you didn't work, I would have talked you into a Windpows Repair. A Windows Repair on a Dell computer is not very painful, 35 minute repair, Windows Updates(more painful) but everything, files folders and programs are still there. I wish you would have posted back.

If you did a fresh installation, then...

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first, then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

QuickSet(Laptop only)
