You need a PCI Parallel port card, if the Vostro has an open PCI slot.  The USB/Parallel port adapters are iffy at best and in most cases will not work with a HP unit (they apparently do not carry through all the control signals).

Virtual memory is cache memory on the hard drive and is controlled by the Operating System as needed.  That should not be a problem.  Also, make sure you are using the correct drivers for the operating system you have as drivers are Operating System specific.  e.g. Win98 drivers will not work on XP, or XP drivers will not work on a Vista OS.
