That's cool your problem's fixed!!

What exactly did Dell Support 3.0 say was wrong with your start-up menu?

This could be an issue with any piece of new software,  I'll throw out some questions for the forum.

1.) Is the Shutdown problem that you talked about fixed?  If not are there any other strange things going on with your computer?

2.) Are your AV definitions up to date?  Do you regularly run Adware and Spyware removal programs and keep them up to date?  Do you use a firewall and regularly run Windows Update?

3.) Have you installed, removed, or modified any hardware or software on your system recently OTHER than Dell Support 3.0?

4.) What Adware and Spyware removal software do you have?  Are you running XP SP-1 or XP SP-2?

PS. Let's try a couple of things.  Go to www.pandasoftware.com and in the upper-right hand corner click on the free virus scan.  This is one of the on-line virus scanners out there.  It finds stuff that my Norton IS doesn't catch!  Enter a valid e-mail address to get information from Panda and click Yes to the installation prompts to install the Panda Virus Scan software.  Updates are provided at least every day.  If you are running SP-2 and the IE information bar appears, right-click on it and click "Yes" to install the program.  If a dialogue box appears, click OK or RUN.  Follow the prompts that appear.  Place a check mark by each of the items that Panda will scan for, (everything should be checked.)  select "All of my computer."  Panda has the ability to check for heuristic software (unknown malware) on your computer, if it finds an unknown, you can fill out a report, send a copy of the bad files to Panda's lab and they will provide a definition fix usually within 24-48 hours!  They update at least once a day.  So follow the prompts, see what it finds, and send a report to Panda along with anything strange on your computer if prompted to do so.

Next Clean out your Browsers History and Temp Files. (In IE go to Tools, Internet Options, than select clear History, than under Delete Temporary Files click Delete Files. Place a check next to delete all off-line content.")  Close your browser for several seconds than reopen.

Next go to: savemybut.com (BUT PUT TWO T's in the word "but.") This forum won't let me post the word here!  It's a computer help forum. Go to the download section.   Download these two programs. (Create a special Internet Downloads folder to put these programs in if you don't already have a seperate downloads folder.)  One is Sybot Search and Destroy and the other one is Adaware SE.

Close all windows and install each of these programs by going to your special download folder where you put them.  Follow the prompts.  Install both programs.

DISABLE YOUR AV/INTERNET SECURITY PROGRAMS BEFORE INSTALLING OR SCANNING WITH THESE PROGRAMS.  Also close all other Windows/Programs

*(Note Adware released an update yesterday 1.06, and you will be prompted to take it when you run it.  I would wait because it is brand new, and they may not have all the bugs out of it yet.  Some people are having problems with the new version.)  After you install AdAware, click "check for updates now."  CANCEL the option about 1.06 but download the updated definitions file!  cross out the box (uncheck) that says, "Scan for Neglicable risk enteries." and select "Perform a full surface scan."  After the scan, right-click and delete everything it finds by selecting, "Select All Objects"  click OK Close Adaware.  Check for updates weekly to twice a month and run a scan.  I would wait for awhile on that 1.06 upgrade.

Next, run Spybot Search & Destroy.  Click check for updates. Download them  Click the Immunize button.  Now click Scan for problems.  Click "Fix Selected Enteries"

Restart your computer.

Check for updates on both Spybot S & D and Adaware weekly if you can. (at least once a month) and run the scans.  Check with Panda by doing weekly scans (daily until you get a clean computer from them)  I think these issues may be related to some preexisting malware on your computer rather than Dell Support 3.0

Hi,  It said I had programs on my start up menu that did not exist. Do you think there is a problem? Believe me, I have lots of them!!

Thank you. I will have to print that out so I can follow it.
Yes, I have Mcaffee, which I am having a few problems with. I run it several times a week, it updates automatically. I run Microsoft antispyware at least three times a week, and I run Adaware often. I have Windows firewall and Sp2.
This antivirus you want me to run, can I do that without uninstalling Mcaffee?

Almost every night my computer comes up with a new problem. MSN kept telling me my passwords were wrong and that the answers to my secret questions were wrong!! Finally, had to change the passwords to be able to use MSN. The one night it wouldn't shut down. It hasn't done that since then. Microsoft antispyware keeps picking up My Way Speedbar as a threat. Just a lot of aggravating things that keep happening. But Mcaffee doesn't find any virus. I will try your suggestions and let you know. Thanks

Yes,

With regard to the above post:  While you should only have one Antivirus Program installed on your computer, you can run as many different on-line virus scanners as you want without interferring with your preinstalled anti-virus program.  IN FACT, NEVER UNINSTALL YOUR ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM JUST TO RUN AN ON-LINE VIRUS SCANNER!!!  YOU NEED A VIRUS SCANNER (MINIMAL) ON YOUR COMPUTER (with updated defintions.) BECAUSE HYPOTHETICALLY YOU MIGHT HAVE AN INFECTION ON BOOT UP.  ON-LINE SCANNERS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU CAN PHYSICALLY GET ON LINE TO USE THEM!!!

You should bookmark this free Panda site and use it in conjunction with your pre-installed Anti-Virus/Malware removal products.  I think you will like Panda and the protection that it provides.  It is easy to use.  Just follow the prompts.

Hey Alpha B,

On my instructions.  Let me give you some more tips.  The administrator over at the SaveMyBut (Two T's in but) has put the Lavasoft Adaware 1.06 on his site.  We couldn't get it to download.  However, one of the moderators uploaded it to his site:  Go here:

http://mysockhasaholeinit.com/aawsepersonal.exe

And the program's executable will appear.  If XP SP-2 complains about it not being from a recognized publisher, don't worry, It's Lavasoft, one of the best Anti-Spyware removal programs out there.  Adaware SE is great.  Save it to your downloads folder, close all your other programs, especially your AV and install the software.  Check for updates NOW and weekley.  Uncheck the "Scan For Neglicable Risk Enteries."  Let it scan, click continue, right click in the list and say (click) "Select All Objects" and click OK.  Confirm yes the objects will be removed,

Restart your computer.

Jack

Great!

One more thing, do all of the above stuff first and then if you still have problems.  That SavemyBut.com with the two t's in "but" has a great resource. (I would strongly recommend it for everyone)  It's an E-book on the home page of the site that will tell you step-by-step how to use the HijackThis program to log problems with your computer. (It's in PDF format, so you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it.)  You should print out the information in this book.  It will tell you how to install, configure, and use HJT with beautifully detailed illustrated instructions.

WARNING: DO NOT DELETE OR MODIFY ANYTHING IN THE HJT PROGRAM AFTER DOING A SCAN WITHOUT HELP FROM A TRAINED HJT CONSULTANT WHO CAN WALK YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS!  DOING SO MAY DO VERY BAD THINGS TO YOUR COMPUTER!!

While we have a good HJT forum at Dell, I have to say that the one at SMB is even better because only one guy (the moderator Nite Hawk) is allowed to give advice for HJT logs and you don't have 3O people telling you what to do.  Do all of the above first on your computer, than go to the two T's Save My But.com and on the home page is an E-book for how to use Hijack This.  Follow the instructions for installing, using the program, and posting HJT messages at the site.  Since there is only 1 HJT moderator at SMB, it may take awhile for a response.  You should also include the operating system you are running, the amount of memory you have and any strange behavior on your computer.  Include this information in a new post so the logs don't get mixed up, leave several spaces and post your HJT log.  It may take a couple days for a log to be reviewed.  I will also talk about the HJT book on the HJT forum here at Dell.

Oh,Hi Jack, thanks for inquiring. I have been so busy this week I haven't had time. I hope I can get to it this weekend -- this computer has me pulling my hairout! I will let you know how it goes. Thanks so much for your help.

Jack, just ran Panda. It scanned over 300,000 files (Mcaffee does 160,00) found 28 items. Mostly Adware (one in the Registry) and one virus (Eicar). It said it could not remove them. I haven't ran anything but the scheduled  virus and spyware this week as I have been so busy. I am going to run Mcaffee now as I am too busy to do anything else right now. Will get to the other things later today. Thanks

Question,

Was Panda able to remove ANY of the malware you talked about above?  Also, did you get a prompt to send a report to them about the bad stuff? (If you send a report, they can work on definition fixes for your issues.)  If you sent a report, wait for 48 hours, than run another scan to see if any improvements have occured.

Do the other stuff, than post a HJT log over at the "Two T'ed" save my but. com site that I talked about above.
