Many of the "techies" (including myself) use Acronis True Image Home for backups.  I also recommend Acronis to all my clients and to users here on the forum.

I am not sure what Version they are on now, but I still use Version 8.0. I did check out the next two releases, but did not find a reason to upgrade. But, even the old version is a great package, and really performs as advertised. The only complaint I have, and not sure if it is due to ACRONIS Software or this old 500 MHZ System I have, is I converted my Internal HD's anf the External USB Backup Drive from FAT32 to NTFS.  The backup and restore time jumped to about 2 hours, from 30 minutes.

The latest version is "2009".  I have the 2009 version as I'm on Vista and it is more "Vista friendly".

Not grotesquely expensive.

most people do not like to be told to do "boring" things like backups. however, once they have a crashed hard drive, they will listen, but of course then it is too late.

I have been an Acronis lover for a few years, and I too am still using Acronis 8, though I do have a license for version 9.....

Funny about backups... You THINK people would learn after a mishap... Relatives had a hard drive die in a retail computer... Lost all data, family pictures, etc...

Knowing how Acronis could have saved them, I bought them Acronis and a USB hard drive to do back-ups on...

This was about three years ago.

Fast forward to last month. Same relatives, nasty computer virus... Guess what? Most recent backup was over a year ago.... They ended up spending tons of time manually cleaning the virus....

Sigh... There is no helping some people, I guess....

With computers becoming more a key part of our lives, the data is becoming more and more important... People need to understand the importance of backing up, so the advice on this thread is good.

The problem is the people who most need to hear that advice are the ones least likely to be reading it, though it was these very forums that got me hooked on Acronis years back....

And speaking of forums, Acronis has nice user forum similar to these if people have any questions or need help....

Sorry for rambling.....

Backups are not for "IF" it will ever be needed, they are for "WHEN" they are needed.

If you own a Seagate hard drive (internal or external), you can download a free copy of Disk Wizard which is actually Acronis.

There are a few differences between Disk Wizard and the retail version of Acronis. For example, DiskWizard won't allow you to make incremental backups of your hard drive. You can only make a full image of the drive which obviously takes a lot longer and is a lot bigger than an incremental backup.

I use it to image my internal and external hard drives, storing the image of each on the other drive, as well as on DVDs, in case of a total disaster. :emotion-3:

Latest version supports Vista here.
