It's okay to install Google Chrome and set it as a default browser; it should not affect any programs and documents on your system. Internet explorer is the default browser which is pre installed on Dell systems. If you are facing issues with Internet explorer, you can try resetting it and see if that makes a difference:
Close all the Internet explorer windows.
Open a new internet explorer window.
Click on 'Tools' < 'Internet options' < Advanced.
Click on 'Restore advanced settings'.
Click on 'Reset'.
Click on 'Apply' and then click on 'OK'.
Close the Internet explorer window and open a new window.
