cannot open read only files

We have MS Office 97 at work and for some reason when I go to open protected files in Word by clicking read only they will not open.  It has not always been this way but not sure when it changed.  I can open Excel read only files.  Any help?????

Exit Word. Then search the hard drive and delete all copies of the template file normal.dot that you find. Next time you start Word it should create a new normal.dot template.

Did that fix it?

I did a search and found 1 file named normal.dot and deleted it.  I went out onto our network again and tried to open a word document that was protected by clicking read only and it still wouldn't open it.  When I had a system administrator log in my computer he is allowed to open these read only files.  I thought it might be something attached to my profile?

Either somebody changed your permissions or maybe your profile got corrupted. You can create a new one, or your system administrator can do it if you don't have permissions, then delete the old one and take ownwership of all the files and folders belonging to that old one.
