Can't read Excel spreadsheet

I regularly get e-mails in Excel spreadsheet. Until recently, I was able to read this using MS Works spreadsheet, but all of a sudden that does not work -- I simply get a "program not responding" message. So I downloaded and installed Excel viewer from MS, but that does not work either. I simply get an "unable to read file" message. Can anybody help?

While file extension do the "Excel" files have?  .xls or some other extension?  Since the Excel viewer will not recognize them, maybe they are not in the standard Excel format?

They have ".xls" file extensions, same as before. The problem has to be with me because I no longer can read the xls files that I was able to read previously.

If this is a recent problem, try the System Restore and restore the PC to a date when it did work.  If that doesn't help, System Restore has an "undo" function that will undo the System Restore.

System Restore can be accessed under Accessories/System Tools.  System Restore will not delete any user data, e-mails, etc but any programs or program updates installed after the System Restore date will have to be reinstalled.

I wonder if your security (antivirus) program is causing this?  Temorarily disable the Antivirus program and see what happens.

Also, try logging in as the Administrator (even if you are the only one on the PC and have Administrator rights) and see what happens.  If that works, it could be your log in profile is corrupted and will have to be deleted and a new one created.

It is now more sounding like a software problem, either the Operating System, the user profile as noted, or a Security program issue.  You didn't mention what Operating System you have, but the recent Windows XP, SP3 did cause some problems with Norton Security Suite and Microsoft has an update to correct that.

Thanks again. The Excel viewer is working now. Don't ask me why? I don't know. Another miracle of WinXP, I guess.
