Ok, we need to make sure that you are using an administrator account.

1) Click Start > Control Panel.

2) Type User Accounts in the Search box (upper-right) and then select the first result (it should be User Accounts).

3) Let me know if the account says Administrator under the account name.

4) Close the Control Panel window by clicking the X.

I does say user accounts, follow by a list of sub-headings.  One says create admin. account.

Went to computer and ran  program files/itunes and found four files, then ran (WICU) and removed itunes, ipod, and updates.

If you didn't include QuickTime as one of the programs when you ran the WICU then run it again to clean up QuickTime. There should have been four total programs cleaned up: Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, iTunes and QuickTime. One other possibility to look for with the WICU is Bonjour. So run the WICU one more time and check for those five programs and remove if present. Once you are sure none of those are left in the WICU, restart the computer.

If that doesn't remove those folders from Computer then I have a pretty good idea of what is happening so go ahead and try that then let me know if those folders and files still show up under Program Files. Also, check to see if the QuickTime folder is present under Program files. (Hint: The folders are brown when looking at them in Computer)

williamkidd,

Quicktime, Apple Mobile Device, Bonjour were all removed in the control panel with no problem.  The Apple Software update couldn't be removed

in the control panel but there was no problem with WICU. I checked again in WICU and didn't find any Apple files. The files are still there after computer

restart.

Bagelm,

We're getting there. It looks like iTunesHelper is being a bit stubborn so we'll have to remove it using another method. We'll attempt this using a Startup Manager.

1) Download and run mLin's Startup Control Panel (SCP). It is a single executable file so it doesn't have an installation program. Use the Standalone EXE Version listed under Download. When you run it you should see a window that has 7 tabs. When you run SCP you should see a Security Warning that gives Run and Cancel options so choose Run.

2) Click the HKLM/Run tab.

3) Locate iTunesHelper in the Name column, right-click it and choose Delete. Do the same for AppleSyncNotifier and QuickTimeTask if they are present in the Name column. It they are not there then they have already been deleted.

4) Close the SCP and any other open windows and restart the computer.

5) Once the computer has restarted, use Computer to navigate to the Program Files folder and try to delete the iTunes folder followed by the Bin folder which is inside the iPod folder, instead of the iPod folder itself which you can leave intact. Also check to see if a QuickTime folder exists under Program Files.

williamkidd,

When I right click itunes helper it blinks like it is doing something, but just reappears.  There is no Applesyncnotifier listed.

williamkidd,

I tried deleting another program to see what would happen and the same thing occurred, it just blinked.  Then I clicked the deleted button on the top

of the Startup Control Panel  page and both Itines Helper and the other program i clicked on showed up, even though the still exist in the Startup Control

Panel list.  When I go to Computer and check Programs Itunes Helper still there.

I tried deleting another program to see what would happen

You'll want to be careful trying things that aren't suggested because it could lead to other issues. It sounds like SCP is acting strangely on your system as you should be getting a menu when you right-click on a program name. Because of this we'll try to remove iTunesHelper using a different startup manager. (Note: I'm experiencing some strange things with SCP on my system as well. When I disable an item it creates a duplicate entry in the list, instead of just disabling the entry, so this is another good reason to try an alternate startup manager. However I do get a menu when I right-click on a program name so it's not quite as strange.)

When I go to Computer and check Programs Itunes Helper still there.

This is expected as we are not yet deleting the file from Windows Explorer as you'll see in my explanation below.

iTunesHelper (along with the other programs listed in the HKLM/Run section of SCP) is loading at startup and because of this the file is in use. Because the program file is in use it is not allowing us to delete it from Windows Explorer (using Computer). That is why you are still seeing iTunesHelper when you view it using Computer because the iTunes uninstall didn't handle it correctly. The usual way of disabling a program is by using MSCONFIG (via the Startup tab). However uninstalling a program when it is disabled in MSCONFIG will sometimes leave an orphan entry for that program in MSCONFIG so instead we use a startup manager to fully remove both the MSCONFIG entry and the associated registry entry (all programs listed in MSCONFIG have associated entries in the registry). So what we're trying to do is remove the program from startup, along with its' associated registry entry, and then once that is done we should be able to delete the program's file from Windows Explorer. In this case we'll also be deleting the program's folder, the iTunes folder.

Next Steps

1) Download and install Startup Manager (use the first link that is for Windows 2000, XP and Vista). Be sure to close all open applications, including your web browser, prior to installation (it will mention this on the first installation window).

2) Run Startup Manager.

3) Disable iTunesHelper by clicking on the checkbox to the left of the program name.

4) Click on iTunesHelper (the program name) and select Delete from the Startup Manager menu (the red X).

5) Close Startup Manager and restart the computer.

6) Once the computer has restarted, open Computer (aka Windows Explorer) and navigate to the Program Files folder.

7) Delete iTunes, iPod and QuickTime folders (if present) and post if any issues come up when trying to delete them.

williamkidd,

Somewhat successful.  Removed Ipod and Quicktime, but Itunes wouldn"t let me do it.  It is giving me the same responce "YOU NEED PERMISSION TO PERFORM THIS ACTION.

It would be a good idea to print these instructions out before following the steps below so that there are no programs open, including the browser. You can copy and paste them into Notepad or Wordpad and then print them out from there. We want to focus on the iTunes folder here.

1) Close all open applications.

2) Click Start > All Programs > Accessories.

3) Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Choose Continue if the UAC prompt appears.

4) Type cd c:\program files and press Enter. ( means press the space bar)

5) Type del itunes and press Enter. (If you are prompted as to whether you want to delete the subdirectories, choose Yes) If you receive any error messages, make note of them and include in your reply.

6) Type exit and press Enter. This will close the Command Prompt window.

7) If you didn't receive any error messages then check Program Files using Computer to see if the iTunes folder is removed. It should be gone but this is just a double check.

8) Post back with the results. Do not do anything with any of the other folders or Startup Manager at this point.
