Can't Update Office XP

Have Dimension 8200 with XP Pro, and Office XP Small Business. Yesterday I downloaded some WinXP updates-one of which I decided I shouldn't have. It was the NET Framework 1.1.  I also did the Windows Rights Management Client update and the new Office update, then when I decided the NET Framework thing was something I didn't need, and like the dummy I am I ran "Restore" instead of just removing NET Framework. After running restore, I tried to do the update for Office again.  There's where I'm having a problem, when I run the scan for Office updates--I get an error "Unable to check for updates on this computer".

I tried going to the main update page for office and just downloading the new update from there without the scan. It downloads but won't install.  I don't remember what that error message is. Something about missing .msp files, I think...  I went back further in the updates and downloaded Office Service pack-1, wasn't sure where it should go, so put it in the Office 10 folder.  That didn't help the problem. I had the Service Pack-2 version currently on the computer already. I've sent messages to Microsoft about the problem but am not getting any answers. The disks that came with my computer are: Office XP 2002, Office XP Small Bus. 2002, and Office XP Service Pack 1, and I updated to Service Pack-2 after. The Small Bus. programs seem to run O.K., but I can't do any updates.  How do I cure that problem???

Thanks,  Dee

Why not just undo the Restore and start all over?

There were a lot of system changes with that NET Framework thing that I didn't want to deal with is why I did a restore instead of just removing it alone. The restore took care of that, however, you are probably right--if I just undo Restore, take NET out it might fix the Office problem.

O.K.   I did the Restore to back before I did any of the updates and changes yesterday.  It did not fix the Office Update installation problem.  When I ask for a scan for needed updates...the answer is "Error, Unable to update on this computer".  When I downloaded the update file from their download page and try to install it...the answer is: "Office Hotfix Installer encounted a problem".

What now?

Sounds good.  Do you have access to that "heavy duty" clean out program to uninstall Office so it can be reinstalled.  I did all those things too.  Add/remove programs wouldn't work.

How do I remove Office so I can then reinstall it?

Yonge:  That's exactly what happened to me!  I did all the things Dell told me to do, Restore, Repair Installation of XP Pro, the file check utility, etc.  Finally they gave me a Microsoft phone # and after I got a Office software tech we fixed the problem. He tried to uninstall Office by the control panel Add/Remove utility, didn't work, then he had me download a Microsoft utility to remove the program---that didn't work either. Finally he had a "special" heavy duty "clean it out" program that finally uninstalled the Office XP. I then reinstalled it and it ran the Update fine after that.  Since there are probably many of us who run the Restore, maybe eventually Microsoft will fix the Office XP so the .msp files aren't effected.

Good Luck!

I too, am running XP Pro on a Dell 8100 and using MS Office SBE

After doing a System Restore, which solved another problem, I am now unable to do an Office Update.  Claims I am missing some .msp files but doesn't give any help in fixing the problem.

It appears to be a known problem and MSFT isn't doing anything to help.

I tried to take the .msp files from someone else's computer and insert them in mine in the same location - but that didn't do anything.

I have no idea how to remedy the problem.

No, I didn't keep the download of the program Microsoft used.  The tech said it was too dangerous to use it without his supervision. It came from one of their tech sites.  Call them.

Thanks.  I hate calling MSFT but will do so if I need to update Office.

Hi Yonge,

Have you resolved your problem? I'm having a similar problem, but I didn't use the restore feature. I simply went to update OfficeXP as I have done many times before, only this time it tells me I'm unable to. Any leads on the special uninstall ap for OfficeXP?

Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa.  No, I haven't resolved the problem.  It seems that this is a known MS problem for which they aren't publishing any workarounds.

I can't update Office SBE anymore.  Missing .msp files or something.  I tried to copy and insert the .msp files from another computer running the same configuration.  That didn't work either.

Someone suggested calling MS but I don't want to go through that hassle if I don't have to.   Hopefully someone out there will have found a way to fix this problem.
