Computer locking-up/freezing when using the 'save-as' feature

Question

I have a dell laptop (Inspiron 5100) that when I try to use the 'save-as' feature in MS Office 2003 the computer will lock-up/freeze for a few minutes, then unfreeze and work fine. It will allow me to choose 'save-as' and type the new file name, but when I click the drop down menu for a new location that is when it locks up, but after a few minutes the drop down will appear, i can pick and spot and save it.   Running XP home SP2 with all the latest updates. I have tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to work or fix it. Does anyone have any suggestions?   Thanks! westwind

Open any Office application and peform and 'detect and repair'. I'm not running Office 2003, but I believe this is in the Help menu. See if 'save as' works properly after this.

Tried the 'detect & repair' but still no luck. The problem still exists. I tried 3 other non-MS programs and all work just fine with the 'save-as' drop down location menu. Any other thoughts?
