Dell Resource CD

Hi guys,

I'm having a lot of difficulty attempting to run the dell resource cd. My younger sister got a new laptop for Christmas, and so I took on the job of making her old one good as new so that it may have some use. I've reinstalled Windows using the Windows Vista reinstallation CD, and everything was fine and dandy until I attempted to install the resource CD which states...

"There was an error launching the ResourceCD Setup program:

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please ensure you are running this program from the Dell ResourceCD."

I've looked around the web for several hours and have attempted fixes including a command prompt system scan and defragmenting then reinstalling again. Unfortunately, since the drivers for wireless are unable to install, I cannot go online on that computer to download any program which may do the trick. I believe the issue lies in the fact that there are traces of virus still lingering (my sister got the computer at too young of an age.. completely destroyed it with junk downloads.)

The computer is..
Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Basic

Is there a way?? All help is appreciated!! I am very willing to supply additional information if needed.

My recommendation is to ignore the resource CD and instead get the Drivers from here:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/w/laptop/3704.inspiron-1525-windows-vista-32-bit.aspx

In order to get maximal performance, follow all the steps in my wiki A Clean Install of Windows Vista which may be found in my pdf document Windows Reinstallation Guide:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3524/t/19480753.aspx

Since she had Virus, Malware and other junk I recommend you carry out the additional optional step I listed and that is to use DBAN to wipe the hard drive securely and completely.

This should remove all files that the standard Windows format will miss (some virus/spyware/junk can survive a format with the Windows DVD but I have not seen anything survive wiping with DBAN). Note the DBAN format will take some time as it is through.

Note this is a Media Direct system so follow the instructions with Media Direct also.

Install the Service Packs, Security Essentials, Security Essentials Latest Definitions and then the drivers in the correct install order. Ensure that the files extract and install opposed to just extracting as explained.

The wiki is quite long but I have designed it to be very in depth explaining it from start to finish.

Use the other (new) computer and download them onto a USB stick. Then insert the USB stick into the other (old) computer and install them from that.

If you are going to make a DBAN CD follow the following instructions:

Download DBAN and burn it to a blank CD/DVD using ImgBurn (on XP/Vista) no additional Software needed for Windows 7.

Before using DBAN any card readers need to be disabled in the BIOs setup. For instructions on how to do this see Card Reader BIOS settings A (likely the settings for this model) or Card Reader BIOS Settings B depending on your BIOS. Not all systems have card readers,

Insert the DBAN CD/DVD into your old machine and power down system. Press F12 at the Dell BIOs screen and select boot from CD/DVD.

DBAN will then load

The easiest way to use DBAN is by typing autonuke and then pressing enter.

You should get these two screens

DBAN will then begin to securely format your hard drive. Note DBAN can take a very long time to securely format a large capacity hard drive.

When completed you should get a screen like this. Hopefully it will say DBAN succeeded although sometimes it mentions an error. Most of the times that it has mentioned an error to me it has actually fully  formatted the drive and ran for the same length of time as it should (i.e. the same time for a system of the same model where no error cropped up).

Once the DBAN format is done, re-enable any card reader within the BIOs setup. You may also re-enable the UEFI and secure boot.

Next set up Media Direct.

The partitions for Media Direct must be set up before the installation of Microsoft Windows otherwise pressing the Media Direct Button while the system is powered down can corrupt your Operating System.

Insert the Media Direct DVD supplied with your system.  It should look like the following:

Power down your computer. Hold F12 while powering up your computer (at the Dell BIOs screen).

Select boot from CD/DVD. Select option 1 (recommended) or option 2. (if you want 2 partitions).

Then install Windows Vista on the main largest partition (do not delete or resize any of the partitions during the setup - see the wiki for more detail).

Then install the Service Packs (download these to a USB stick using the new computer):

Then the drivers (downloaded onto a USB stick using the newer computer).

Once all the drivers are installed reinsert the Media Direct DVD and run the application on it while on the Desktop.

Thanks for your response,  natakuc4.

As per your suggestion, I attempted to manually install all of the drivers. Since the computer cannot connect to the internet, I attempted to install the linksys router via the CD, and got an error telling me it could not find the ethernet cable which was plugged into the computer. I cannot seem to get online.

Thanks,

Jordan
