Thanks for your reply. I am unaware of any automatic updates that were done and checked my updates history and saw nothing around that time period when this occurred. It was fine one day and the next day it was like that. In any case, I uninstalled the Dell Support 5.0.0 which was listed on my programs and downloaded/installed the Dell Suppport 3.0 and now the icon has returned good as new. One problem I have noticed quite often lately is that when I try to open links, the computer is freezing up a lot. This is very frustrating. While reports are being sent out to MS I don't know if Dell needs to be aware of it. MS has not responded to the reports. The Dell PC check-up says everything is OK! Is this the sign of something maybe more serious? I hope not! Thanks for your reply...
WOW! Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your Dell. I was thinking of buying a Dell lap top at that.
I ended up uninstalling the Dell PC check-up and reinstalling it... then no problems. I have periodically had trouble with my Dell but they were software issues and not really hardware related. Mine still does a lot of freezing up these days especially with links but no "blue screen." Good luck to you and I hope things straighten out soon.....
Thanks..it looks as if I'm going to need that "luck" Got the blue screen 2 more times since my last post. I am in contact with someone who has had the same problem on his Dell (he paid about $1,900 for his) and now his pc is totally fried. Tech support tries to blame it on a software issue (I bought the extended warranty, good until Nov 2009, but it's only good on the hardware.... that wasn't explained when I purchased it)...clearly there was an issue with the software from the beginning then.
This pc is only a month old..I don't see why anything should need uninstalled at reinstalled so soon. I just had to reinstall my printer driver...the printer stopped working, too.
I was advised that the software issues were due to the fact that the Windows XP Cd's which they installed before purchase..were reused thousands of times....hence the problems. ...no wonder they don't offer a warranty on that.
Good luck to you if you buy that dell laptop..I can assure you that this is my first and last Dell purchase unless they resolve these issues.

Did the PC do some automatic updates and then restart before you noticed the black square?

My Dell icon disappeared totally from the task bar, and I didn't remove anything either!
The Dell pc checkup says that nothing is wrong with mine either..now the printer stopped working, too.
Have you received the "blue screen of death yet? My pc is only a month old, and I've gotten it 5 times already...I wish I never bought a Dell!!
Good luck!
