EIDE DVD not recognized on Precision 610
I have a Precision 610 that is all SCSI (2 hard drives and CD) and Win ZP. I have added a new DVD burner which is not recognized by the OS. I changed the setup so that IDE is set to Auto. All cables, etc are plugged in correctly. I have tried both the EDI 1/2 slots an still no avail. I look in the Device Manager and there seems to be a ATAPI driver loaded. Any suggestions?
Thanks

hey hab:
have you tried a different ide cable ??? i have a pws 410 scsi raid with a liteon 411s burner on secondary ide channel, also set burner on end of cable as primary. the 410 has 2 b older than your 610. anyway it works just fine. try both a 40pin/40wire and a 40pin/80wire. i am currently using 40pin/80wire round cables and they work great. maybe its that version of windows your runnin,, windows zp ;-)

hab:
no drivers needed for ide stuff. do u have some kinda intel bus master ide controller in device mangler ??? this has to be there. since you have nothing on either channel you won't see primary or secondary. in my config i have intel controller and only a secondary ide channel , since i'm running scsi. once again what type of ide cable r u running ?? i had problems with 1 computer i was working on where the dvd burner would only work with a 40pin/40wire cable, as soon as i tried to use the 40pin/80wire cable, the dvd was never recognized. r u plugged into priamry or secondary ide channel ???? try changing that also.

Yes, Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers I have the Intel PCI Bus Master IDE Controller.

My burner is on IDE2, wouldn;'t that force it to dispaly the channels or is that only for hard drives
> once again what type of ide cable r u running??
Started with 40/40 ribbon cable then tried it with a 40/80 round cable. Neither seemed to make a difference

Currently EDE2 but tried both. I guess I will go back to the start and try all the combinations once again with the various channels and cables to see how that goes.
Thanks

ok:
here's a thought.... can u get anything 2 work on that channel?? any old kinda cd-rom.. that may be a good starting point, but if you have the ide bust master in device manager,, then when u hook up a device to either channel it should show up. also check bios.. i forget off hand what the ide setting r for the controller, but most ide bios settings have a setting for each device on the ide channel called "auto".. see if there's something there.

I finally got it to work. I started by having two cables...one 40 pin and one 40 pin with ground (80 pin). I started by enabling IDE in CMOS and then swapped the cables out and in each slot IDE0/1. The system finally recognized the 80 pin cable in IDE0.
Thanks for all the help.
