It sounds like your Excel file association may be broken. If that is the case, this should work: With both Word and Excel closed, open Windows Explorer and find the Excel file you wish to open. Right click on the file and select "Open with." When the "Open With" dialogue appears, select the proper program (Microsoft Excel). You can check box to always open this type of file to re-establish the file association.
