You can't remove OE, but you don't need to.

If you have a shortcut on your start menu for 'Set programs Access and defaults', click on that and set the defaults as you want them. If you don't have that shortcut, control panel, Add/remove programs, on the left you can access 'set program access and defaults' from there.

Also, in IE, Tools/internet options, programs tab, set Microsoft Outlook as the Email program.

It sounds like you have Windows XP. Go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs and set MS Outlook as your default email handler.

All,

Recommendations so far have not prevented Outlook Express to open when I click on an email address from a program other than Outlook.

Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Have you tried opening Outlook and then:

Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.
  2. Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar check box.

Please be sure that Outlook Express is closed before opening Outlook.

As I attempted to follow instructions from the last recommendation I suspect the problem may be an incompatibility issue with the version of Outlook I'm using.  I'm using Outlook 2000 which does not have check boxes under "General" to designate Outlook as default for E-Mail, Contacts and Calender.

Anyone that has had luck setting Outlook 2000 on a PC running MS WindowsXP as the default so Outlook Express does not open when an imbedded email address link in an email or non-Outlook document is selected let me know.  Your help will be appreciated.

Review the information provided in the Microsoft article on using Outook 2000 as the default mail program and see if any of the information applies.

-removed- sorry, command line switch /firstrun is not supported by OL 2000

PS. You can *uninstall* OE from Windows XP: Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components

but this is not recommended especially if you access news servers since there is no support in Microsoft Outlook

Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218381/en-us applies to Outlook Corporate or workgroups.  I just have a stand alone workstation.

I do not have the Outlook CIW (Custom installation Wizard).

And references directing me to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) subtree were incomplete, not having enough info to set Outlook as the default mail client.

Thanks for your help but the links suggested were of no use.

Recommendation to remove Outlook Express via control panel does not work.
