How to disable Dell Recovery Partition Warning

I have a Dell that I've used for many years running Windows 10 Pro.

I noticed just yesterday that a number of folders in my C: drive (including C:\Windows), when I try to browse to them are showing a warning message and won't show me any contents.

Dell

Recovery Partition

Warning!

This area of your hard drive (or partition) contains files used for Datasafe Recovery process.

Do not delete or alter these files.

Any change to this partition could prevent any recovery later.

I imagine I set up Dell Recovery at some point, but I never touch it, and I've never had it restrict any folders before.   I opened Dell DataSafe Local Backup from the task bar, and a window opens stating that it has not been able to detect the Recovery Partition and it may be missing or corrupted.

I'm not clear on how to proceed.  I can't do anything from the "Manage Backups", it just asks me to upgrade, and smells of malware.  I'd like to just disable the warning and carry on accessing the folders that have the warning.  If I can repair the partition (which I don't think it includes the files warned anyway, but i digress), then that would be fine.

Any suggestions or guides to fix this issue?

Hello!

The thread is a little bit old, but since I found no solution anywhere I thought I post my solution that I found after some investigation for future readers.

I still don't know the cause of the problem, but I know a way how to fix it - at least for the moment.

First you need an app which has Explorer-like capabilities but does not use the Explorer engine. I use 7zip which lets me navigate through folders an do basic file actions.

It's useful to let the Windows Explorer show hidden files so you can at least see the folders in Explorer.

Now I opened 7zip (in administrator mode to save some time) and navigated to the particular folders.

When I stepped through the folders that gave me the error message I soon realized that they all contain some specific files:

  • AUTORUN.INF
  • Desktop.ini
  • Info.exe
  • several files with the patern "protect.language", e.g protect.german, protect.greek etc.

After deleting the Desktop.ini with 7zip I could easily access the folder with Windows Explorer.

I executed the Info.exe for further investigation and it gave me the error message that came up when I tried to open the folder earlier. So I guess I was on the right track.

Then I deleted all the files that I mentioned above and now I can access all the folders.

At the moment they are still hidden and I don't know how to un-hide them, but this is not a main problem.

I hope I could help you.
