Thank you for your advice which turned out to be sound.
I'd already had a look at the DEP but was not too sure what to do.
However after reading the info on the link you provided I applied the advice.
Unfortunately the same still happens and I'm at a loss - all the relevant settings in IE8 are checked, ie: allow active x content and cd's to run the two dvd rom files have now been added to the DEP exclusion list. All IE add ons have been disabled.
I'm at a loss, particularly because they used to run ok on the same said system.
This kind of problem can be aggravating. I would recommend you try the following:
In IE8 - Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. Click the Reset button. Click the check box for remove personal settings. This will give you the as close to original settings as possible in IE. Try the CD's.
You'll have to enable your Add-ons manually again - Tools, Manage Add-ons.
In control panel, Add/Remove programs (Programs and features in Vista/7) find the Java entries and uninstall them. Then go < here > and download/install java again. I've found this has worked for some of my clients.
Well this could be any one of a number of things. Is Windows up to date with updates? If so, try downloading the TuneUp Utilities trial version and run the registry cleaner. You can get it < here>.. Without being there to see what your system is like, it's difficult to troubleshoot. Let me know if the registry cleaner helps. Always reboot after cleaning the registry.

Have you tried uninstalling the Java update? If you have it installed, then uninstall, you can use the update it again.
I am just thinking of any possibilities for a fix....

Hello Allan.
Thank you for your reply to my problem.
I have reset/deleted the personal settings in IE8.
Addons are disabled.
The two dvd rom files in question have been excluded from DEP.
Allow CD's and files boxes are checked.
I'm afraid there is still no joy, when you click on the sound applejet IE shuts down.
Art.

I'm with you Allan, but which/what Java update.
Java is not something that I've ever needed to 'tinker' with

Allan.
Carried out your instructions - no joy I'm afraid.
I suspect that IE8 is the problem as the audio aspect used to work.
I have tried downloading IE7 but my system downloads 8, I would suggest by 'default'.
Ia there any way that I can download 7 ?

Click < here > and see if you can hear the audio as it is a java sound applet.
Also, does sound work on other applications?

Allan.
Could not hear any sound.
Other applications such as music & videos on you tube yes.
The system windows media player does not work. I have been informed that I need a codec.
VLC media player plays the dvd's but there is now no sound.

That's just it, I don't know.
Properties state windows media player, no particular version.
Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place ?

Hello Allan.
Windows is up to date.
I've down loaded Tune Up, ran a full scan, (all options).
Selected all the recommended settings.
IE still shuts down, with or without add-ons, as soon as you click the audio applejet.

Have you tried uninstalling IE 8? Control Panel, Programs and Features, View Installed Updates...
