Jumping Cursor

Problem is related to typing characters from the keyboard, and occurs when working in the body of an Outlook Express or a Word document.  The cursor unexpectly jumps from its current location (just after the last typed character) to another position in the document.  At times it moves down in the document, sometimes up.  It is never predictable where it might move.  In an email document the cursor may wind up behind my signature, in the body, or in the "Subject" line.  I recognize that I might be inadvertently depressing key combinations that cause the cursor to move.  However I've never had this problem with any other software / hardware.  And I've never seen this happen so consistently.  My wife also has experienced this problem when using my laptop and she, as well, has no previous history with this happening.  Thanks.

I'd recommend uninstalling the wireless mouse, then seeing if the problem goes away.

I will give that a try tomorrow and let you know how it works. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, the insertion point is what I'm referring to.

I have both a touchpad and an attached mouse, but I rarely use the touchpad.

And I have a printer connected to my laptop.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Control panel, Regional and Language options, Languages tab, click details. In the list of installed services, highlight Speech recognition, click remove. If you have several languages remove for each where it appears (e.g. on my PC English (UK) and English (US) both have it, French doesn't). Click Spply, OK out.

Should you want to restore it at a later, highlight the language, click add and check the relevant box in the panel that opens.

PS Apologies, did not mean to cut in, had not seen that there was a second page to this thread.

Thank you. I will give that a try. Boy, I have so much to learn and so little time. I appreciate help from individuals, such as yourself, who are computer experts and willing to share your knowledge. Thank you to Mr. Bach as well.

Learning a bit more, day by day,

Hello all.

I have exactly the same problem with my Latitude D800, Office 2003. I have removed all speech recogntion etc as described in this Microsoft KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823586

I will post back in a day or two to confirm that this solves the issue.

I'm using XPHome on a Compaq laptop (Presario 2135US) and have the jumping cursor (insertion point) "feature".  XP Home does not have the voice recog feature - at least it is not in my list of services installed.  I've come to the conclusion that the cursor jumps because of the capacitance effect of ones palm, actually the part just beyond the thumb, which, depending on where the trackpad is, is usually directly over the right side of the pad.

If I'm careful to keep my right palm raised, about half inch above the surface of the pad the jumping does not occur.

Also some trackpads have a scroll feature located on the rhs of the pad (this one does) and that together with the capacitance effect may also be contributing to the problem.

Perhaps this may also be what is causing your jumping problems.

No, no, no...  it has nothing to do with speech recognition or a wireless mouse.  I have the jumping cursor problem on 3 different laptops here at the office, but not a single desktop computer.  I think it has something to do with the auto-save function built into Word, because there is always brief disk activity everytime it happens.  Anybody have any insight they can share?

I have a Dell Latitude c600 with the same jumping cursor problem.  It seems particularly bad with email  and after I type the letter y.  If it is a capacitance problem, is there any way to shut off the touchpad?  I never use it anyway.  Thanks!  Judith

I had the same problem with my Compaq Presario notebook. Their tech support solved the problem immediately. Below is the solution they supplied (abbreviated for brevity):

The TouchPad is very sensitive and can respond to electrical discharge from your hand causing the pointer to move. Move your hand away from the TouchPad when you are not using the TouchPad... You can also solve this problem by adjusting the sensitivity of the TouchPad... You can also download the latest drivers for the TouchPad...

I had downloaded the latest driver, reduced the TouchPad sensitivity, and the problem is solved!

Hope this also solves your problem,

Nobie

I've also had the same problem.  Just recently tried something that worked for me on an IT  friends suggestion; maybe it will help you also.

All I did was do a simple windows update.  Seriously.  It corrected the jumping cursor immediately.  Worth a try, good luck!
