Keep Having Errors in Excel 2003 Program vbe6.dll

Question

For the past 3 or 4 days Excel keeps crashing, and the Event Viewer says an error has occurred in vbe6.dll version 6.4.99.72. This error in turn apparently creates another error about which the Event Viewer says 'Hanging application EXCEL.EXE version 11.0.6355.0 hang module hungapp. version 0.0.0.0'. How does an upstanding gent and Excel lover like myself correct the problem that vbe6.dll keeps having in many of my workbooks. For what it's worth, I downloaded Office SP1 about two weeks ago, and these errors might have started after that, but I can't be sure there is a connection. I can eventually fix what appears to be corrupted workbooks by laborously reconstructing them, and each might work for awhile, then for no apparent reason I start having crashes and repairs. Sometimes Excel says arrogantly that no repair was required. Other times it says it has removed bad conditional formatting that it found. I have been using these workbooks for a couple of years maintaining investment statistics, and I never had any problems with conditional formatting. Wait a minute, I do remember being unable to get a conditional format formula that used 'AND' or 'OR' to work. The individual parts of the AND/OR worked OK, but not when I ANDed them. Strange, because I have LOTS of AND functions in various conditional format formulas elsewhere. But that problem seemed to go away and I forgot about it. Connection?? Oh yes, I run Spybot and Ad-aware and Norton Antivirus daily. Yesterday for the first time I ran Excel Detect and Repair, but it didn't tell me anything, and I'm still getting vbe6.dll errors somewhat sporadically when I least expect it to occur. Sorry for the long story, but I sure would like to fix this... just don't know how.

Update to yesterday's post: This morning the first Excel workbook I opened immediately crashed. Excel recovery "repaired" it and the result was that EVERYTHING in that workbook was trashed . . . totally unrecoverable! This was a simple workbook that contained a lot of text references . . . no formulas, but I did have about 6 VBA macros I wrote to do searches and create new entries, etc. Event Viewer had the same cause as before to other workbooks: "Faulting application excel.exe version 11.0.6355.0
vbe6.dll version 6.4.99.72. Event ID: 1000".
I've spent about 2 hours searching the MS Knowledge Base for vbe6.dll, and related error messages, and there was lots of stuff for Word, especially Word 2000, but nothing about the problem for Excel. I gotta get this crash thing fixed.

Try findiing the vbe6.dll and rename it, then do an Office repair to see if this fixes the problem.
