Linked Word documents won't open when copied to another system

Hi

I have a series of documents created in Word 2000 which include linked Excel objects within them. I cteated them on my Dell desktop and then copied them via my LAN to my laptops. Now if I try to open the word document on the laptop (with the desktop turned off) it won't open and sends a message to Microsoft about the error. However, with the desktop on, the file opens normally on the laptop. Makes me think the Word doc is looking for the linked file back on the desktop but when I check the link it is to the correct and present file on the laptop. It is not linked back to the desktop file. Apparently.

A workaround is to open the laptop file (when the desktop is on) and then break the link, but I'd like ot know what's going on here. Any ideas? The desktop is running Word 2000 with win98SE. The laptops are XP SP1 and XP SP2 with Word 2000.

Thanks

Since "desktop" has another meaning in Windows, I myself use the term "tower" (even though it may be a horizontal form factor) to refer to the other kind of PC (not notebook). Your description sounds like your network is peer-to-peer and not server-based, otherwise you could have both kinds of files on a shared folder or set of folders stored on a server.
