Microsoft office website

Question

If I go to the Microsoft Office website and check for updates, I get the following error message:   Office Update is unable to check for updates Help The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This may be happening because of one of the following reasons: You do not have administrative privileges for this computer. There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try running detection again. Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance. You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if Unavailable. Would it be possible to reinstall the windows installer patch files?

Most likely you are not logged on to your PC as an administrator. Does your user account have administrator priviledges?

You need to install Office 2000 SR1 patch and do all the windows updates before you can go to the office update site. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/CH010620351033.aspx

I have Microsoft office xp professional with publisher 2002. Does the link apply to office xp?

No. For Office XP, to download updates, addins, etc to hard drive and install from there, start here

You can also check whether you have one or more of the service packs installed (any office program, help menu, about, read what it says in the top line e.g. mine says Word 2002 (10.6612.6735) SP3).

If you don't have SP3 you can download that directly from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=85AF7BFD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en

(it includes SP1 and SP2, so you don't need those if you don't have them; but read the info on the page)
