If that document somehow got save as the normal template it will open every time that Word is opened and will appear to be a document. Try the generic fix for Word problems. Make sure your system is set to show hidden files and folders then do a search for
normal.dot. Right-click and delete every occurrence that is found. When you restart Word a new normal template will be generated and with luck your problem will be solved.
right sorry denny but that didn't work, i enabled show hidden files and folders and did a search of all files and folders for
normal.dot and no results were found. it sounded like my problem though, any other ideas?
you were on the right track. its all fixed now, it was to do with templates, although it didn't show up in the search i was looking on word at templates and found where theyre stored, (in documents and settings an blablabla)
i manually looked here and found the file called normal buried in the depths of documents and settings, deleted that and its all fine. even though i put show hidden files and folders it didn't show up in the search but you were right all along. i was thinking it was the auto recover thing instead of a template. anyway its all solved now.
many thanks
Richard

Something is incorrect because if a normal template is not present Word will generate one so somewhere on your hard disk normal.dot is lurking.
