Microsoft Works Update Detection (WkDetect.exe)

Question

This loads at startup.  I thought it installed as part of Microsoft Works that came with my Dell 4300; I use Windows ME.   Is it legitimate software, or is it spyware or similar.  When I unchecked it to prevent loading at startup, my resources went from 68% to 80%.   Thanks, l5205

From my elderly site on startup items regarding this program (which is legitimate, but not required at startup):

"A program that automatically looks for updates for Microsoft Works. The user can easily do this manually at convenient intervals."
