Thanks for the reply. I ended up re-booting my machine (should have done that earlier!!) and the problem went away. I tried your solution though and it didn't replicate my problem. With extend on, it takes 2 clicks to select a range. The problem I had was it was like I was holding the left button down because wherever I went on the screen, the cursor acted like it was trying to select a range. For example when I scrolled up to the menu bar, it would not let me access any drop down menus or even the minimize or off buttons.

Does the Status bar show "EXT"? If so, you have the "extend"? function on; just press F8 to toggle it off.
