MS Word 2002 OEM Question

Concerning MS Word 2002 OEM as used in XP Home:

On my ME computer with Word 2001 I could rebuild Word by unhiding all files and folders then seaching for Normal.dot then deleting all files that were returned. Then when Word was reopened it would be rebuilt.

With Word 2002 OEM and XP Home this doesn't seem to work. The search does not return any files or folders. How can I rebuild Word 2002 as used in XP Home?       Thanks..................

MS KB Article 319154 outlines the procedure.

eleanor246,

RE: XP Home SP1a Word 2002 as part of Work Suite 2004 OEM version.

I went to the link and the instructions to rename Word Normal.dot Global Template but there is a problem there.

When I click Programs, Microsoft Office Tools, then there is no Word 2002 Support to click on? nor is there Troubleshoot Utility to click on?

I installed Work Suite 2000 that includes Word 2000 and still when I search for normal.dot and files are unhid there is nothing returned. But when I had this same program installed on a ME OS machine it did?

I cannot tell what's going on here. In your first post you mention Word 200 1. Now you mention installing Works Suite 200 0 including Word 200 0 and searching for the normal.dot template.

In addition to Works Suite 2004, which contains Word 200 2, how many versions of Word do you have installed?

eleanor246,

I know it's confusing. Lets start fresh. I may have made an error in what versions I have, I did it with out looking. The following is correct.

I have two Work Suite programs, only one is installed at any one time.

One is Work Suite 2001 (Dell) which includes Word 2000 SR1,  and the other is Work Suite 2004 OEM from Newegg which includes Word 2002.

When I had the Work Suite 2001 and Word 2000SR1 installed on my ME computer I was able to search for and find the normal.dot file. When I install this same program on my XP computer and search for the normal.dot file it does not return the file as it did when it was on my ME machine.

When I uninstall Work Suite 2001 and then Install Work Suite 2004 that contains Word 2002 on my XP machine I am unable to locate the Word 2002 Support Template, nor am I able to find the Troubleshoot Utility as is described in the link you provided, and thus unable to rebuild it.

I want to be able to rebuild the Normal.dot Template in Word 2002 as is used on my XP machine.

Does the fact that this Work Suite 2004 that has Word 2002 is an OEM version from Newegg have anything to do with this?

Note: System does not have a virus (NAV). No spyware running on system (Spybot)

Thanks............

Rim Shot,

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or bundled software, is software that is obtained as part of the purchase of a new computer. OEM software licenses usually prohibit the purchaser from reselling the software without the computer, or in some cases, without any computer hardware. Additionally, Microsoft is not required to provide software support for OEM software. The support is provided instead by the computer manufacturer, for instance Dell.

The OEM classification has nothing to do with the software options available, i.e., the normal.dot file in this particular case. This is the default template file that is required in order for any version of Word to function as designed. The only other possibilities that I can offer are

1. Perhaps there are remnants remaining of your uninstall(s) of Works Suite. If you will review Dell-Karell's post dated 05/21/03, How do I completely remove the Works Suite software? at the top of this forum, you find this uninstall procedure is extensive and requires editing the Registry.

2. Perhaps there is a flaw in the Word 2002 in Works Suite 2004 disk you purchased from Newegg. Or a scratch on the disk could possibly affect a portion of the data on the disk. I'm just guessing here though. IF you currently are using Word 2002 with no apparent problems, this doesn't sound like possibility. It indicates there is a normal.dot or support file present in the current installation of Word 2002.

3. You could also post this normal.dot question in the Software - MS Office Products forum and mark the post for the forum regular, abach. This person is very knowledgeable with respect to the MS Word application.

In Windows XP your normal.dot is in C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

As the \Application folder is hidden, in Windows Explorer or my computer, click Tools in the menu bar, folder options, view tab, check 'show hidden files and folders. Also, uncheck 'hide extensions for known file types' so you can see the .dot extension; click apply, click OK. In search, more advanced options, check the first three boxes, set the search to start at c:\ drive.

The support.dot file mentioned in the link is, on my system at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Macros

As I have MS Office, not Works, it may be that the \Macro folder is not under Microsoft\Office10, but under some other subfolder in Program files. Search for support.dot. note the folder that it is in. Open Word, go to tools, macro, security and set it to medium. Open support.dot click yes on the warning message to enable the macros.
