MS Word Not Enough Memory Error

Hi,
I run a Latitude C400 with Windows 2K Pro and two sticks of memory 512 and 256. Everything runs fine except Word. The error message "Not enough memory or disk space to complete this operation" comes up when I try to use most items on the Format and Tools Menus. This error also comes up when I try to print.

I believe I have enough memory. All my memory is shown when I check the properties of "My Computer". I have run CC Cleaner and defragged my hard drive. I have run a registry cleaner. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled MS Office. I have tried the MS Office Repair option before trying the uninstall/reinstall.

My dad has an old MS Word, maybe 95 or 98. I noticed this problem first after transferring one of his files to my machine. I am not sure if there is any connection to my problem though.

You're welcome. You'll probably need your OS CD handy in case sfc asks for it. You may want to uninstall Word or Office before running sfc and then reinstall it afterwards.

BTW: to edit one of your previous posts, while logged in, click "Options" on right end of gray bar with title of post you want to edit.

Let us know how things go.

Does Win2K have a repair/reinstall feature like XP? That might allow you to reinstall the OS without having to wipe the drive and starting from scratch. You'll still need to reinstall any Windows updates/hotfixes.

Or does Win2K have a system file checker like XP? sfc checks XP system files and replaces only the missing/damaged ones.

Sorry the swap file thing didn't help. Good luck.

Hi Ron,

I never was able to solve that bug. I am going to capitulate and reload my laptop.

Would you tell me the best way to totally wipe my hard drive clean and then install Windows 2000. I don't see any option with the Windows 2000 disk and I tried  typing FDISK at the Run command prompt but no fdisk was found.

Also would you know what difference does it make if I use my own Windows 2000 disk rather than the Dell Windows 2000 disk Dell gave me? Is there any benefits one way or the other?

Thanks, Dolfin

Thank you for the link. I'll look at Dell's knowledge base more It is great what you all are doing on this Forum.

Not reply needed.

Ouch. I thought you'd fixed that problem. Here's Dell's guide to reinstalled Win 2K.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1088730&l=en&langid=1&c=us&cs=19&s=dhs

You cannot use 'your own' Windows 2K disk on the Dell, if it has been used to install the OS on another PC. That isn't legal. You also can't use the Dell Windows OS key (look for a sticker on side of the tower) with a "non-Dell" Windows CD, even if it's the same version of Windows. The Dell OS key will only work with the Dell OS CD.

In other words, you're stuck. But there isn't any advantage to using your own CD even if you could. They're the same OS. After loading Win 2K, remember to reinstall all the drivers, starting with chipset, if your system needs one, followed by video, audio drivers, and then any Win 2K updates and hotfixes. Back up your personal files before you start.
