MS Word Not Enough Memory Error

Hi,
I run a Latitude C400 with Windows 2K Pro and two sticks of memory 512 and 256. Everything runs fine except Word. The error message "Not enough memory or disk space to complete this operation" comes up when I try to use most items on the Format and Tools Menus. This error also comes up when I try to print.

I believe I have enough memory. All my memory is shown when I check the properties of "My Computer". I have run CC Cleaner and defragged my hard drive. I have run a registry cleaner. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled MS Office. I have tried the MS Office Repair option before trying the uninstall/reinstall.

My dad has an old MS Word, maybe 95 or 98. I noticed this problem first after transferring one of his files to my machine. I am not sure if there is any connection to my problem though.

No, you can reboot. This is a challenge. Let me do some more research and get back to you

abach,

No... still get error. By restarting Word you meant to go to open MS Word in programs, this I did.

I have not rebooted as I am not sure if you want me to put back the Data and Options keys or just go ahead and reboot....?

Is there anything you want me to do before I reboot the machine?

Try the information available here:

(I used to be able to insert links as hyperlinks, but it seems this forum only allows me to post in plain text, so you'll have to copy and paste the link)

abach,

Still the  Error haunts the machine :).

I am getting to think you have gone beyond the call of helpfulness here. A re-install of Win2000 is drastic but....

Is there any other possibilities before I take this step and is this step even a solution?

I'd probably just uninstall Office 2000, use the uninstaller utility to completely clean the PC of Office 2000 (do a search for Office 2000 uninstaller on Microsoft) and then reinstall Office.

Sorry about not being able to fix this.

abach,

   Are you talking about:

 the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility?

I ran this after uninstalling Office from Add/Remove Programs. The Cleanup Utility did not show any remenants of Office.

Also, what about the Registry Keys I deleted. Do I need to do anything about reinstalling those?

Thanks For Thr Help,

dolfin

Are we sure this is really a Word problem? Even though the /a switch allows it to run properly, it may actually be a Windows swap file issue.

Open System control panel
Click Advanced tab
Click Performance Settings
Click Advanced tab
Click Virtual Memory Change button
Put dot in System Managed Size
Click Set button
Click Apply
Click OK back to desktop

Reboot and try Word again.

Rohe,

I am using Win 2000 Pro. There is no Advanced Tab in my Performance Options. There are radio buttons for Aplications and Backround Services. Below that is a Change button for Virtual Services. When I click the change button there is no radio button for System Managed Size. It just lets me change min and max for Page File Size and maximum for registry. These are set at: Min 550 Max 766 and 55 for max of registry.

Sorry, I presumed XP. You may want to increase the max value. I don't use Win2K so have no idea what's a good upper number. It depends on size of your HD, how full it is, among other things. Maybe Denny will weigh back with some opinions, but you could try pushing it up to ~1000, if it will let you, just to see if you're on the right track to resolving this problem. You could always lower it again, if other problems arise or maybe you need to archive some files to CD to free up more space on the HD.

Denny, Abach, Rohe,

No luck. I increased the Virtual Mem up to 2000 as I had 14000 free space. I think the will go ahead an reinstall Windows from scratch. Luckily it is my laptop rather than my desktop. Thank you for all your suggestions with this thread. You have taught me a lot that I did not know. I will, no doubt, be back again with another issue.

Ron,

Thanks for the heads up. SFC and the Repair option in Win2000 sure beats a clean wipe :). I'll give those choices a try before the Big Erase.

All help is appreciated. Help gives hope and hope is a great gift.

Good Weekend,

Dolfin
