MY NEW DELL INSPIRON - FIRST SETUP DID NOT GO WELL

Hi There,

Can anyone help me with this. When I opened my brand new Dell Inspiron 15, Windows 8, laptop and switched it on, the set up process started but in between the laptop shut down without notification and when I started it again, the desktop appeared (strange to me). no icons on the desktop except ebay and recycle bin. When I tried to access "my documents" "my pictures",  a window pops up saying unable to open and you may delete the folders! I dont know what to do.

Is there anyway I can get to do the setup again smoothly???? Please help!!

Since this computer is brand new, you should contact Support directly. You have a limited time to return the computer for an exchange if that is necessary. Computers should work right out of the box.

Hi Sunona,

I would like to know when this problem started. Have you made any software or hardware changes to the system?

I suggest you to Refresh the system, The Refresh option is primarily a repair method. It is a great method of returning your PC to a known good state while preserving your files and a great deal of your configuration. With the refresh your PC option, user accounts, data files, and some settings are preserved on your PC without the need to create a backup, or make choices about what to keep or remove.

To Refresh windows 8 please follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Open the General section of PC Settings by the key combination WIN KEY + C to open charms bar and click PC Settings.
  2. Click the Get started button under Refresh your PC without affecting your files.
  3. Click the Next button at the Refresh your PC step of the wizard.
  4. You may be prompted to insert installation or recovery media if there is not a recovery image preconfigured on your PC.
  5. Click the Refresh button at the Ready to refresh your PC step.
  6. At this point, the PC is restarted, and the refresh actions are completed.

Restart the system and check.

Please reply for further help.

Thanks Mary, that's what I though initially, but Nikhil's reply helped and my IT advisor also suggested that. Now its working fine.

Thank you all for responding.
