What error message(s) are you getting.  That information would help someone to assist you with your problem. Your post is basically "I have a problem" and that is not nearly enough info for someone to assist you.

Are you behind a corporate firewall?  What firewall, etc are you using on the PC?  Do you have the security set to "high" in Interenet Explorer, which could prohibit running certain on-line programs, etc.

figured it out! It took me 6 hours +/-.

Office XP Professional with Publisher program preinstalled from DELL on my laptop.

Here goes instructions for my fix and it worked, try it:

  • update and perform a virus check of your computer, most current dat files etc.
  • download to a temp file on your main "c" drive OxpSp1, OxpSp2, OxpSp3(fullfile), Windows Install Cleanup file MS Office web site.
  • load Windows Install Cleanup file program and start program (WIC)
  • disconnect your computer from internet by unplugging wire (cable or dialup) completely
  • within it (WIC) highlight and remove OffXp complete, Publisher, and any pdf converter programs that you have installed on your computer
  • disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • re-install original Of Xp from CD (no Publisher yet)and do not open any programs when completed
  • reboot computer
  • again disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • re-install Office Publisher from CD if you wish to have it
  • reboot your computer
  • again disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • reminder - do not open any programs until the very end of this drill
  • now install OxSp1 from temp file & following directions
  • reboot computer
  • again disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • now install OxSp2 from temp file & following directions
  • reboot computer
  • again disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • now install OxSp3 from temp file & following directions
  • reboot your computer
  • again disable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs
  • now open each of the programs one at a time and close them as you go in your Office XP program in order to activate them including Publisher
  • reboot your computer
  • enable virus program, firewall, spam program, spyware programs, etc.
  • open each of your programs again and use them briefly to make sure they all work
  • volla! It works for me!
  • and here I am writing to you explaining how I did it !!!
  • It worked for me just fine !!
  • But I do not know why or how. Nobody from MS or Dell could help me.
  • Good Luck

I hope that this helps other people with the same problems that I had with constant updating errors and error reporting.

Glad you made it work.

I would just like to point-out that SP3 comes with all that is in SP2 and SP1, so installing only SP3 will give you all updates/bug fixes.

Hi Rick,

I was aware of that and tried that first to no avail. Then I tried them one at a time and it worked. What can I say. It was frustrating.
