File extension .wps covers a document created using the Works Word Processor in the MS Works Suite application. The Works Word Processor is a stripped-down version of MS Word.

So there is no way I can open it if I don't have the works word processor, even though I have word in office xp and word perfect.

thanks,

Word will open some versions of MSWorks WordProcessor files.  But instead of doubleclicking on the file, open MS Word then Click File, and then Open.  You can try "all files" or specific Works file versions to see if it will open.
